I'm not sure I agree with what you said about terms implying grouping symbols. The example you gave was one term since it had not addition sign separating the 3x and the 4y. Can you please provide a resource that gives a proof of what you are saying.

For the top equation how did you get 3 for N and 1 for M I'm a little confused?

I am afraid you are most likely wrong about evaluating terms.  If what you were saying -- that a number juxtapositioned next to a variable had special order of operations which translated into an implicit bracket operation then 2y² = (2y)². One of the few things I remember from polynomials is 2y² ≠ (2y)².  It would even make more of a mess with things like polynomials with matrixes...
