As a highly educated and creative retired history and geography teacher, I cannot express how much I look down on schools who "fill in" a P.E. coach's schedule with social studies classes. If your school does this, do not complain about the abysmal lack of knowledge among American students in history and world affairs. I have known such teachers and they usually assign students to read the chapter, answer the questions at the end, and put up with all the comments about how boring history is and how they will never use this stuff.
