Building Indonesia’s $35 Billion New Capital City Nusantara

Since Indonesia’s independence in 1945, the capital city Jakarta had expanded from less than a million people to roughly 30 million. It has grown tall with skyscrapers, but the capital has run out of space. It has grown thick with traffic and pollution. Most of all, Jakarta is sinking, as thirsty residents drained its marshy aquifers and rising sea waters lapped its shores. 40% of the Indonesian capital now lies below sea level. So far everything that has been done to save the Capital could not raise Jakarta above the sea’s reach. And so, president Jokowi has turned to a different solution: If Jakarta cannot be saved, he will start over and build a future capital from scratch. Today we will venture into the $35 billion future capital city of Indonesia which is located in the middle of a rainforest.

FYI: Indonesian government in official announcement never say that they build new capital to rescue Jakarta from sinking or they build that new city to replace Jakarta as metropolitan city and center of business or even arrogantly said that it will solve Jakarta's problems, what they always said that they just execute the initial plan of building Indonesia capital city in the Island of Kalimantan that already planned when Indonesia gain their independence in 1945.

the statement of "Indonesia build their new capital on borneo Island to rescue sunken city of jakarta" uniquely coined out by international media that independently connect it with the problems that Jakarta have, even most of Indonesian and Jakarta's resident never thought of that reason as the main reason Indonesia build their new capital in the Island of Kalimantan

and also it's production forest area that have little to none real indigenous people, people that live there mostly from transmigration program that Indonesia held in 70-80s, so with or without IKN build there, that forest will be used as commodity and also all the development of their new capital is strictly follow European environmental standard to keep it environmentally friendly.

and most people that actively disagree with Indonesia new capital come from NGO, opposition, western media, not from Indonesia people themselves, most Indonesia support their government effort to build their new capital.

Ghost city won't be happening in a populated country with hundreds million citizens. Indonesia is one of the fastest growing country and it's the perfect time for them to build a new capital city.

as an east kalimantan resident, i would say that most of the criticisms come from foreign medias and less from indonesians. majority of indonesian laypeople and experts support the idea to build the new capital, including local people. And the thing you said as 'forest' is not actually forest. It's a industrial plantation labelled as forest (hutan industri/industrial 'forest') and the plants there are mostly homogenic such as rubber and palm. biodiversity has long gone decades ago, so it's totally misleading if you think this new capital will remove the orangutan habitat. I personally believe that this project will recover the forest instead due to media and public attention, and it's deeply embedded into the design of the capital itself.
Oh the 'gost city'? seeing the indonesian birth rate, chance for that to happen is slim to none :D

As I am a government officer, next year perhabs I have to move to the new capital. Its difficult to leave my house and other things, but we must do it! The issue is actually not about the sinking but the megathrust, and economy distribution therefore though the capital is going to be relocated but there are masive infrastructure development in Jakarta. In the future Jakarta will be a business city like new york and the capital will be in NUSANTARA. Incase the Megathrust hit Jakarta in the future, the goverment which is located in safe island, Borneo, can handle the disaster. Of course this mega project is dedicated to make Indonesia sustain no matter the situation because we realize that we are in the ring of fire

God blees us.

Maju terus Indonesia 🇲🇨🇲🇨🇲🇨.

This news is totally misleading.

1. There is no intention to relocate people of Jakarta to East Kalimantan. Government is only planning to relocate the centre of government administration to new capital. It means only those who are central government employees will need to move to new location. Not all population.

2. This new capital is being built over the industrial forest, human made forest not natural. So the forest is not the natural habitat for wild animals such as orangutan. The forest is and was an industrial forest.

3. There are no indigenious people living in the area so the need to relocate them is very little to none.

CNA should do a detail research before making this kind of news. It is very misleading..

It would not be as a ghost city, as all central government civil servants are mandatory to move and stay in Nusantara, and they will bring some if not all of their family members. And they need market, school, cafe, etc, these are private sector to handle. So, ghost city will not be happened to Nusantara.
