How was Cyprus able to join EU with this ongoing conflict with northern part of country?

That was a valiant effort to condense a semester long course into half an hour. And also a reminder of the complexity of addressing current affairs. Thanks for trying.

6:25 This statement about the reason why Greek Cypriots rejected the Annan plan, shows complete lack of understanding the issue and worse. It wouold have taken less than 5 minutes of research to uncover a few impartial resources on the web that state the very valid concerns which are:
- The plan denied refugees the right to recover the property taken from them by force after the turkish invasion
- The plan did not include a settlement regarding the repatriation of Turkish settlers living on Greek Cypriot owned land, a war crime by turkey that is the equivalent of ethnic cleansing, as turkey's plan is to change the demographics of the island by bringing illegal settlers from mainland turkey

- The Anan plan was in clear violation of EU acquis & international law by placing a permanent restriction on Greek Cypriots' rights for freedom of movement and establishment, in their own country no less.
- The Annan plan also perpetuated the presence of the turkish occupying troops allowing them to remain on the island indefinitely and exonerated turkey from any war crimes it committed in Cyprus, required Cypriots to pay for the cost of the turkish invasion (including compensation for property loss),
- But worse of all, the plan would have made Greek Cypriots (78% of the population) a minority in ALL 3 branches of their country’s government and would have resulted in increasing friction and destabilization, exactly what happened in 1963, only 3 years after the original constitution was forced upon the Cypriot people who did not have a chance to vote for it or even have any input

Also G/C rejected the Anan plan because it was calling for the disarmament of the national guard immediately while the Turkish Army would have withdrawn gradually. The people are not morons.

The video and narration seem to be several seconds out of sync in the later part of the video.

Any particular reason for using the pre 1801 Union flag for the British Areas on Cyprus?

You used a very inaccurate British flag at 3:22 for some reason, that flag hasn't been used since 1800. Also, not sure what the vehicle overlayed on the flags is meant to be.

12:55 Thank you for explicitly mentioning the demographic elephant in the room: The settlers. In the occupied zone, the settler population is currently believed to outnumber the locals. This is quite significant for an EU member state. I think the only somewhat comparable situation elsewhere in the EU would be the Russian settler population residing in Latvia and Estonia. Under EU pressure, these settler populations are gradually disappearing as their descendants either acquire citizenship or leave.

To be clear: The Turkish settlers and their children are NOT Cypriots! They are ineligible for Cypriot citizenship (and hence EU citizenship), because their presence on the island is a violation of the Geneva Convention. Only the pre-invasion population and their direct descendants are eligible for Cypriot (and EU) citizenship. The rest are foreigners.

Having a fictional citizenship in the puppet state created by Turkey is completely null & void. Neither the UN nor the EU recognizes such fake citizenships. Anyone wishing to obtain citizenship in Cyprus will need to apply in the normal way, like in any other country.

you forgot about the returning of property to original owners and the the ghost city that turkey refuses to give back despite UN resolutions calling for it to do so

Isn't Turkey breaking international law by allowing its citizens to settle in occupied Northern Cyprus? I've heard similar arguments about Israeli citizens settling in the West Bank.

HOW CAN YOU ILLEGALLY OCCUPY YOUR OWN LAND ? TURKISH CYPRIOTS HAVE LEFT ALL THEIR LAND IN THE SOUTH WHERE GREEKS HAVE OCCUPYING AND SETTLED IN THE NORTH.

The Cyprus problem can be solved if you name Cyprus what it is now. The United States of the Mediterranean Cyprus. You have two states one country. North Cyprus and South Cyprus is one country. All the refugees are going to choose what they want to do with their properties. 4 options. 1st going back to use it. 2nd exchange it. 3rd option sell it. 4rth option rent it for money. The green line will be the border of the states. The states will have UN security forces and no foreign military forces except for the British military bases. The president is gonna be elected the way the USA presidents are elected no nationalities involved. Name it United States of the Mediterranean Cyprus. 2 states 1 country 1 nation. The president will be elected like the president of the USA. European Union country for all Cypriots. No foreign armies except for the United Nations and the British Bases.

There can be only one solution to entire Cyprus situation and that is a two state solution.

If Western nations were not so hypocrate of refusing to recognize there are Turks living on that island that has been tried to be exterminated many times by the Greeks and recognized their rights to live.. Now we wouldn't be asking these questions.

Fact that none of the comments notice the ridiciousness of the map at 23:02 is amazing. How is it that people see this nearly fair and internationally acceptable is beyond me.
