The Secrets Behind UNDERTALE's Music You Never Knew! Undertale Theory | UNDERLAB

Undertale's OST is one of the most praised of its time, and like anything of significance, there's quite a few stories behind its conception! This video looks at some of the more obscure trivia (did you know "Your Best Nightmare" plays in places outside of the Omega Flowey fight?) about Undertale's leitmotifs and lesser known songs that you may not know, from the harrowing dirges of the genocide route to dogs in bikinis...

Underlab explores the secrets and obscurities of UNDERTALE, that game everyone seems obsessed with. There's a lot of said secrets and obscurities. Like, a lot. It also showcases and explains the lore and story of the game in an attempt to explain, clarify, and perhaps even discover completely new stuff...

UNDERTALE is a game by Toby Fox
Redline produced by Madhouse
"Best Friend" art by Moofinseeker
Harry Wakamatsu created the UNDERTALE replica fonts used in this video
UNDERTALE sprites ripped by The Spriters Resource community (thanks UnderFail, JamminJelly and ILLUUM)
UNDERTALE OST extended by Elu Tran
Extremely convenient save states provided by HylianAngel
Special thanks to my best friend(s)

Doo do dooo dooo do doo dooo dooo... oh, sorry, you just caught me humming while anticipating something. Be sure to let me know if you enjoyed this video, as I'll be sure to make more parts if you did!

I think Toby Fox did this because he wanted us to get nostalgic from the past moments in Undertale.

Also because there are so many songs that have leitmotifs in them, there are considered to be around a few original songs that don't have leitmotifs in them or ones that don't expand onto other leitmotifs like Ghost Fight.

I really like how in Hopes and Dreams, you hear Flowey's theme. That hints at the fact that yes, you are fighting Asriel, but it's not the real Asriel, it's still Flowey in control.

Music has always played a key role in my life! Achem..

My name is King Mel and I really can tell,
that the monsters who love me are doing really well!

I met this new friend and his name is quite swell,
He's got white fur and horns: his name's Asriel!
He bleats like a baby and cries when he's alone,
He just wishes he could get a shot on the throne.

To be cont..!?

Bonetrousle (GENOCIDE) is probably the most creepy leitmotif of Bonetrousle.

I had been learning to play Asgore's theme with a piano teacher and I had to explain several of the things in Undertale, as she herself was into games she could relate.

Regardless, I had mentioned about the 6 Human Souls and Frisk and she had pointed out something that easily blew my mind about Bergentruckung. (the intro)

It actually symbolizes each of the human souls. Notice it (relatively) repeats itself around 6 times then picks up at the 7th. This music symbolizes each human and how they have all died, Frisk is the seventh, we're the last soul to set monsters free and the song shows how we're still alive and in the way. Only after that does it transition into Asgore. You could even argue the note symbolizes their arrival, their journey and their death. Perhaps the reason some of these "soul" melodies are longer or more unique than others is because their journey was more eventful and they survived longer. Hence why Frisk is the longest.

I wonder why Alphys' theme is called 'Alphys'...

Thank you, Underlab, for teaching me how to pronounce leitmotif.

I think that the music also shows relationships, because the baseline for Undertale is His Theme (Asriel) and the melody is Once Upon a Time (in my opinion, Chara's theme because we see her in the cut scene), so it symbols the friendship between them. Also, the motifs in Asgore and Heartbreak may symbolize Toriel and Asgore's relationship.

Undertale's biggest mystery:

HOW IS METTATON STANDING AND WIGGLING WITH JUST 1 WHEEL??

"No other game has an experience quite like Undertale's genocide path."
I'd agree with you, except there's one problem. Have you ever played a game called OFF?

I would like to point out, I am an UNDERTALE music maker and I study the music hard to create my own songs. Most of Undertales OST was made from the EARTHBOUND soundfont. So that explains why you get nostalgia when you listen lol.

HOLD IT...

IS THAT ILLEGAL?!!

I noticed similar names of the music belonging to characters match with either their personality or something related to them.

Toriel- Heartache (defending the humans and keeping the ruins exit closed)

Papyrus- Nyeh heh heh (based on his laugh) and Bonetrousle (Because of his bone attack)

Undyne- Spear of Justice (She fights with a spear and for the sake and future of all monsters)

Mettaton- Metal crusher (Being a robot who is "bent on killing us") and as Metatton EX- Death by Glamour (because of his appearence) etc.

I think Toby is a genious for all he has done with Undertale and it's music

You got something wrong. Too Much is a slowed down version of "Your best Friend, " not "Your best Nightmare."
