There are two notices used on prepackaged foods : use by, which means what it says (very handy for those who have lost sense of smell, and best before, which really means sell by. The latter can be turned to advantage in that big discounts are often available. Some stores refer to these items as “bar code cancelled” or “discounted for quick sale”. Others have mentioned the best before dates being a commercial tool. That’s true, so take advantage when you see the yellow sticker (or however your particular local retailer draws customer attention to the bargain!)

In most cases any canned or dried food products in Canada the best before date can not exceed two years past the date of the beginning of processing.

Thank you for sharing this information. I have said this for years!! 😉 My daughter has a food science degree and I finally got her to admit pretty much everything that you just said! They put a guarantee on the side of the package while some companies do that if it is bad before the date they will replace it. But for the most part they just want you to buy it and if you don't eat it right away to throw it away and buy more! 🙄

Foods packaged in plastic often starts to leak larger amounts of harmful substances past the best by date, keep in mind cans are lined with a plstic layer as well
