Welcome to the first episode of Historical Herbal. This is a passion project of mine that I’ve had in my head for a very long time. Yarrow - Achillea millefolium
Chamomile - Matricaria chamomilla L
Birch polypore mushroom – Fomitopsis betulina

This was great, thank you for putting this together, especially starting in prehistoric times. You hear alot about herbs used throughout history (at least you do if you study herbalism!) But not so much about how and if they were used in neanderthal times. It is amazing and humbling to realize that even in times modern people think of as primitive or animalistic, humans had such instincts as to know that plants are here with us for many reasons, not just food for animals and such. We all have it in our dna to regain those instincts and oneday I hope we will (although we will probably be forced to and not just as a thirst to reconnect sadly).
Coincedentally, I just started a book called Witches, Midwives, and Nurses A History of Women Healers. It too relates to early cultures and how universally people used plants as medicine without ever needed to confur with each other. So cool!

This was really interesting, can’t wait for more! Thank you so much!
I wonder how much trial and error went into those early discoveries!? That’d be fascinating to hear about! (I wouldn’t want to be part of a Neanderthal clinical trial!)
