Grandfather's Clock (1876)

A clock's action is connected to a man's life.

Lyrics

1. My grandfather’s clock was too large for the shelf
So it stood ninety years on the floor
It was taller by half than the old man himself
Though it weighed not a pennyweight more
It was bought on the morn of the day that he was born
And was always his treasure and pride
But it stopp’d short, never to go again
When the old man died

Chorus
Ninety years, without slumbering (tick, tick, tick, tick)
His life seconds numbering (tick, tick, tick, tick)
It stopp’d short never to go again when the old man died

2.In watching its pendulum swing to and fro
Many hours had he spent while a boy
And in childhood and manhood the clock seemed to know
And to share both his grief and his joy
For it struck twenty-four when he entered at the door
With a blooming and beautiful bride
But it stopp’d short, never to go again
When the old man died

3. My grandfather said of those he could hire
Not a servant so faithful he found
For it wasted no time, and had but one desire
At the close of each week to be wound
And it kept in its place not a frown upon its face
And its hands never hung by its side
But it stopp’d short, never to go again
When the old man died

4. It rang an alarm in the dead of the night
An alarm that for years had been dumb
And we knew that his spirit was pluming for flight
That his hour of departure had come
Still the clock kept the time, with a soft and muffled chime
As we silently stood by his side
But it stopp’d short, never to go again
When the old man died

words and music by Henry Clay Work
published by Chauncey M. Cady, New York City

This song is beguiling in its simplicity, naturalness, humor, and the easy flow of melody and accompaniment. It seems to have a paranormal theme. It was written several years earlier but it's publication was delayed due to the Chicago fire of 1871.

This song gave "grandfather clocks" their name. Before this song they were simply tall case clocks. I have always loved the song.

My mother sang this song when I was a child. It has sort of haunted me all these years. Now I’m glad to find it again.

The idea of a clock and owner having the exact same time-span is such a great idea for a song. No wonder it's a classic....

My grandmother was from Aberlour, Scotland. She would sing this to me in her Scottish burr. It always haunted me because when she sang it she would emphasize the phrase " Stopped, short, never to go again, when the old man died". Maybe that's why I have had an aversion to grandfather clocks all my

Did you know this song had a sequel? The grandson goes back to his grandfather's old house and finds the new owners have thrown the clock away.

Sir, I'm a last-year highschool student with bunches of exams' stress everyday. This song of yours has saved me over and over! I grew up quite lonely my whole life listening to stories about my grandfather. Just how much I wish to have a grandfather once again! This video is an ultimate blessing. Very relaxing, and amazingly, sir, I feel like my grandfather himself was singing the song to me. Thank you very much for doing all these, Sir. Aside from that, I hope when I grow up, I'll be able to make people's life happier doing what I love, like what you're doing right now, Sir.

As a kid in the 70s, I had this song on a record of old songs like
"Grand Old Flag" & "Yellow Rose of Texas". Love those old tunes...

Very, very nice. And I seem to remember this but, of course, where to find it? Ah, the Sheet Music singer! Another wonderful addition to good memories. And very well done.

This song is nineish minutes long but it's beautiful and sounds like historical music like the Old English language. It's from 814 AD (814 CE) This is a medieval song. This long is very long and it's the perfect amount of time for a song. It's just the right timing for this song. Happy New Year's Eve my name will be like an old historical name. This comment is so short. But this is a short comment about the nine minute song. This is a Frankish song. I like this song because it's old, beautiful, and the perfect amount of time for this song. But my name is still Spain. Thank you for this comment. Bye

I'm so happy that these old songs were preserved. I think I first heard this with Korean lyrics from the Korean movie C'est Si Bon which was a semi-biography of the 1960s or 70s Korean duo Twinfolio. Correct me if I'm wrong.
