I have done it both ways. The reason for skates first is because it is easier to spend time adjusting the laces without pants on. I have even done it both ways as a goalie. With goal skates, I started ripping the back of the legs of my goal pants. That seemed like a reason to put on the pants first, but it turned out it didn’t matter if there was a rip.

I get putting on your skates before your pants….but shoulder pads and elbow pads before pants is just wild.

Pants not last but last of the bottoms to go on. It’s 10x easier to tie your skates. I hated on it till I tried it once. Haven’t gone back

I do something similar to the second guy, difference is I put jersey on after pants, then the bucket, then the mits
