What is Snowbird Like? This is What You Can Expect

Snowbird is an awesome ski/snowboard resort. Why? Well, it is arguably the most accessible major winter resort in the U.S. given how close it is to Salt Lake City Airport. And it has great, though advanced, terrain. So what can you expect if you take a vacation there? Here are some tips:

1) Proximity to SLC Airport. As mentioned above, Snowbird is extremely close to Salt Lake City Airport. With so many direct flights available to Salt Lake City, it is hard to imagine a more accessible winter resort in the U.S.

2) Parking. Snowbird has many options for parking, ranging from free to paid valet. When some resorts have moved to 100% pay parking, it is nice to see one that offers a variety of options so that everyone can find an option that they like.

3) Chairlift Choice at the Base. There are three main routes up the mountain that align with the parking areas. First, the Gad Valley Base offers two chairlifts. These are ideal for beginners and intermediates, as well as experts who want to head to the Little Cloud area, which has a lot of expert slopes. Entry 1 takes you to the Gad Valley Base chairlifts. Entry 2 takes you to the Wilbere chairlift. Wilbere is ideal for beginners. Entry 3 and 4 take you to the tram and the Peruvian Express chairlift, which are ideal for experts, though there are a few intermediate slopes available as well.

4) Accommodations. Snowbird resort has four options for slope-side accommodations. The Cliff Lodge, the Iron Blosam Lodge, the Inn and the Lodge at Snowbird. Each offers a different experience. There are also Airbnb options.

5) Food Options. There are three main food options at Snowbird. The Gad Valley Base, the Mid-Gad Restaurant half way up the mountain, and Snowbird Center. So plan accordingly.

6) Views. Snowbird has the most dramatic views of jagged neighboring mountains that I have seen in Utah and Colorado, except for Arapahoe Basin. If you do not want views of rolling mountains, you may like Snowbird's views.

7) Slopes. Snowbird has a large amount of advanced terrain. If you are a beginner skier or snowboarder and find yourself at Snowbird, you may be most comfortable in the Gad Valley area and the Wilbere chairlift. Those areas have some of the flatter slopes. Intermediates and experts can enjoy those areas as well, but they can also explore the terrain that is accessible by the tram and Peruvian Express chairlift.

Gotta get the mouth of the Cottonwoods by 6:45 am on a POW day. Then have a nice drive up and relax in lodge at the base. At about 8:15 am head out and stand in line for Gadzoom. Skip the tram. Gad Valley usually opens earlier. Nice plan NY SkiBoy... skip lunch so you can get more vert

Nice video and thanks. I am utterly perplexed at your ski choice though. What are you doing on those little slalom skis at Snowbird???

Music is a bit loud compared to the speech but it's a good summary in prep for my trip there in a few weeks

Park City is clearly more accessible than Snowbird. I love Snowbird’s terrain much more than Park City but that 2-way highway up LCC can be a nightmare.

Don’t forget the 4hr traffic jams going up and going down the canyon on pow days.. Also parking is no longer free. Bus service has been cut in half. Powder days are more rare these days. Crowds and more crowds thanks to many more on the Ikon pass. And ticket prices have gone up. …You’re better off going to Park City or check out BC in Canada.

Ski mid week non holiday. Start at Entry 1 and start at Creekside. Ride the Gad lifts to mid mountain then ski to Little Cloud lift which gives you access to the runs at and off the summit. The Tram and Snowbird center can be crowded in the morning. From the top of Little Cloud you can access Little Cloud Bowl, Mineral Basin, The Cirque traverse or The Road to Provo. Be aware there are no easy runs off the top of Snowbird. Visibility can be challenging like flat light or white out conditions depending on wind and weather. It’s the real deal for terrain and snow if you know where to go and how to navigate from lift to lift. Ski with other people if you’re going through the Avalanche gates because there are over 2, 500 acres of terrain.

When you go to snowbird do you have a rental car company you prefer or know which one is cheapest? We’ve got our whole trip booked other than transportation
