It's time we take a look at another place of interest in the Kanto region in a little series I'm calling...Tour of Kanto. Let's take things way back to the beginning to the first real "dungeon" area: Viridian Forest.

Next do a tour of that one area behind Bill's house. We all know he's hiding some pokégods in his backyard.

this series is my favorite thing on YouTube right now

I've played all of the games and know the maps like the back of my hand, but the presentation style and narration is so cozy that I keep coming back for more episodes

can't wait until Johto 😍

Really digging the Zelda music in the background, the forest temple theme adds a layer of mystery/eeriness.

Viridian Forest felt like such a daunting gauntlet to me as a kid playing an rpg for the first time.

I vividly remember playing Pokemon Blue on Christmas Day of 1998, getting poisoned by a Weedle, and rushing to my Dad terrified that I'd broken my Gameboy when the screen started flashing as I walked. The game never indicates to the player that's going to happen, so you sort of have to just figure it out. A lot of game mechanics worked like that in Gen I, which feels a bit funny because these days one of the biggest criticisms I hear of modern Pokemon is that apparently the games do way too much handholding.

When I was a kid stepping into Viridian Forest for the first time, I heard the music and felt the spooks. I fought a wild Metapod and knocked it out on accident, then some extra text showed up about how I leveled up and here's some numbers getting bigger. I said "ugh, stupid numbers don't mean anything, go away!" I was playing Blue, my brother was playing Red, and my mom was making dinner thankful that these animal games seemed to be entertaining us. I really didn't let her know how much she meant to me.

Fun fact: the Master Trainer with the Pikachu is named Ikue after Ikue Ootani, the voice actress of Pikachu.

The samurai maybe one of the most underrated characters of the original anime he was the very first kid to battle Ash, a very important labor if ya look at it in a historic way, but has been forgotten over time

That Beedrill art has always been so clean to me

5:39 the defining characteristic of the Viridian Forest theme is the use of the devil's interval...also called a tritone. It's a chord that consists of two notes that are two semitones apart (e.g., C and F-sharp). The result is a rather uneasy sound that isn't pleasing to the ear...perfect for a creepy forest maze filled with hostile monsters and trainer battles.

The episode of the anime where Ash catches Pidgeotto and Caterpie was my first exposure to the entire Pokemon franchise back in the fall of 1998. As for "fans of the games questioning the logic of it", well... the first few episodes came out in the US and Canada approximately 2-3 weeks before the English release of the Game Boy games

I love these chill videos. Feels like old youtube and not the new super stressed format.

Love the way Caterpie skidaddles across the screen to use Tackle.

I was 8 years old when Red/Blue was released in Europe. It was truly something truly special to get your first Pokémon game on Game Boy and look at those little pixels bouncing around and let your imagination go wild. :) Thank you for this series and hitting my soft spot for nostalgia. My kid is now 6 and she absolutely loves to play Scarlet/Violet on Switch, I hope she can capture even little bit of that magic we had as kids.

Me starting with yellow, first time play through, finds the 1% Pidgeotto, thinks its a scripted encounter and I really am playing Ash’s story, wastes every ball I have trying to catch it. Fails.

Man childhood was wild.

I love how everyone has completely different childhood experiences about getting the Pokémon games but they all feel so familiar

I love that gen 1 pikachu art, so much cuter than when they stretched it out. Never understood why they changed it

I dont know how you so successfully transport me back to the late 90s and remind me of my 7 year old self, but I'm so glad you pull it off.
