Alison! Alison! I have found the perfect accompaniment for my violin practice sessions. I do the open string exercises while my upstairs neighbor stomps his floor!

I will have to talk to him about that, as he's not that good at keeping 4/4 time... :O

I absolutely LOVE these exercises! They really help to produce a clear, defined sound on each of the strings. Thank you Alison for your amazing work:)

I luv your UK accent..for those Americans...do not get confuse about how she pronounce the quarter note, the half note, the whole note, 1/8 note, and the 1/16 note, etc...You are an excellent teacher for beginners...You are not giving too much to overwhelm. I like how you gradually teach the students what is the most to least concern ...during the various phases of instructional violin. Some musical instructors are so arrogant and impatient. I know because I had to hired and fire them.

I am 24 years old and my sister bought me a violin as a gift and believe it or not. Your first 4 lessons helped me a lot with holding my violin and learning quickly the notes. Thank you so much for real !

Hi! I'm an adult with ZERO violin experience and very basic music reading ability (read: learned piano rather desultorily as a wee lass, stopped because teachers were completely uninspiring, felt like a chore). I bought a violin, have been doing Lesson 1-5 and just practiced the PDF of Open String Exercises mentioned here. This is brilliant! Amazing how smooth and well thought-out everything is, lesson by lesson. Looking forward to Lesson 6.

I have asked for a violin so I can learn to play. I don't know if I'll get it, but I'm brushing up on your quite comprehensive instruction. Thank you for making this so accessible. I've downloaded and saved your exercises. I feel blessed that I already know how to read music, so the talk of notes and more is comfortable for me. Now I just have to concentrate on the open notes and go from there. Well, the positioning too. Can't wait to learn!

I found these exercises very helpful, and use them daily with a metronome after practicing long bows in front of the mirror for a while.

Thank you for everything you posted that made this possible, playing the violin is awesome !! 😃

I’m a brass player and having this most excellent teacher go through the basics of violin is soo helpful, as it’s quite hard to master this instrument… one day Vivaldi!! I hope

Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I have wanted to learn the violin for so long and just got my first one today.  Now my next step, learn to only get one string at time :)

Yes, one does not have to use the entire length of the bow at all times. If i need a 4beat note for example i will use more bow in combination with a slower movement and vise verse. I also use shorter bows with longer notes to create 'bounce' type effect notes if that makes sense. Best thing is experiment as different lengths of bow create different timbres and sounds.

I’m a 29 year old mom who minored in classical music education in college and I’m learning violin for the first time. I was given one today as a birthday gift. These videos are great! I feel like I have no idea what I was doing but I have a good foundation after practicing with this series. Thank you!

Hi Alison,
I really love the way you teach.
I already play guitar but I have always been fascinated by the sound of the violin. Now I have this brand new violin so... it looks like a new challenge for me. I decided to follow your lessons for beginners and then... well, let's see what happen!
Thank you for your help
Cheers
Christian
