How a Jeep Patriot 4WD system works - Compass too!

There are other videos on this topic as well including official videos from Jeep themselves - but people continue to ask about it online so I've added my description to the library.

This applies to all 4x4 Jeep Patriot models and all Jeep Compass models made before 2018. It's not quite the same as the 4wd system you'll find in Liberty, Grand Cherokee, Wrangler or other Jeep models and it's not AWD or "All Wheel Drive" .

If you're driving off road you can switch into commanded 4wd mode at any speed - the behavior is all software defined and it prevents any kind of harmful operation.

The following word has been included in this description for reasons that would take too long to explain, you can safely ignore it : JJJreact

Hey pal YOU must be working for JEEP or getting some sort of kickpack from JEEP; SO WHATEVER NO DO I CARE WHO YOU ARE OR WHO PAID YOU I ACTUALY OWN A 2016 "JEEP PATRIOT LATTITUDE" and its The FWD stopped working four years after I bought the heap of shit' amd I hardly used MY JEEPS CRAPPY 4WD SHT!!!. And before that a pice of Shit' called a cam sensor would cause MY JEEP CRAP PATRIOT vehicle to shut down in the middle of traffic the 4WDSHIT STILL dosent work till this very day and guess how long the dealership had me wait in the waiting room for them to fix the CAMM SENSOR CRAP; APROX5.5

People hear this; JEEPS ARE GARBAGE AS WELL AS MOST OF THE VEHICLES THE US AUTO INDUSTRY CRAPS OUT. This guy (and I DO NOT CARE WHO YOU ARE AT ALL DONT ALL) is obviously promting this garbage of a vehicle and I will tell you as a 911 service medal veteran AND COLLEGE GRAD AND LONG TIME VENICLE OWNER AND NOT BUY THIS PICE OF $HIT OR BE IMPRESSED WITH THIS GARBAGE VIDEO. My "patriot" is still in my driveway THIS winter with no 4WD I HAVE RARELY USED THE 4WD AND IT STILL WDOSENT WORK. CHRISTLER /// DODGE //// ''''ESPECIALY JEEP'''' IS A GARBAGE BRAND. I OWNED A NISAN EXTERRA AND THE 4WD WORKED EVEN AFTER THE REST OF THE BODY RUSTED AWAY! AND My HYUNDAI car WITH NO 4WD lasted me for 15 AND IT HANDELED BETTER IN THE SNOW THAN A CREAP HEAP OF SHIT JEEP IF YOU HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO DO THAN SIT IN A CREAP JEEP WAITING ROOF FOR SIX PLUS HOURS AND HAVE BAGS OF CARS TO PAY THE JEEP DEALERSHIP CREAPS THEN BY ALL MEANS BUY A CREAP JEEP AND BE PREPARED TO BREAK DOWN I THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC AND BE PREPARED TO HAVE NO 4WD IN WHEN YOU NEED IT. BE PREPARED TO WALK TO WORK WHILE JEEP EMPTIES YOUR BANK ACCOUNT JEEP =

STOP POSTING DISINFORMATION VIDEOS LIKE THIS TO SCAM THE PUBLIC CHRISTLER DODGE JEEP

Great information in the video. We just got 12” of snow and my Patriot made it around flawlessly. Just a question tho. I have a little ticking noise. I had my mechanic take a look and said I had a little cam wear but didn’t see a problem in the engine. Any thoughts?

Thanks for this info session....my patiot 4wd was not working properly on dirt roads and warning lights flashing when ever I used it and back wheels never locked in and ingaged... So a diff Oil change and clean out wire plug has fixed my issue...so thank you for your time and knowledge of this system .... thanks again

Awesome video. We just purchased a used Patriot and I wanted to see when you could engage/disengage 4WD. I had no idea it's really a front wheel drive, a plus, and engages the rear wheels for 4WD. Also had no idea it's sort of always in AWD/4WD at low speeds and heavy acceleration. You did a great job explaining it.
I hope it works as well as we're anticipating. We live in a northern climate with fairly steep access to our place.

And what’s crazy is my 2wd patriot kicked ass in the snow. I didn’t even need 4wd. I miss that lil monster.

3:16 thats AFTER the gear reduction of the transmission, 160ft/lbs can easily exceed that depending on the gear and axle ratio
but your right about the location of the clutch reducing driveline noise, i noticed exactly what your describing on my touareg even though they tried to mitigate it with basically rubber u joints

I’ve always laughed because of how smooth my pat’s rear diff engagement is, “I’ve got this lil lever right here that makes this fun light pop up on my dash. Not really sure what else it does.”

Problem with off-roading the partriot (besides the ground clearance), is the lack of low gearing. You don’t have enough torque to crawl, so you need to depend on momentum.

Makes it a better all-around road car, but limits how much fun you are able to have with it on the weekend.

That's a way of doing 4wd/Awd i didn't know about.

This is actually the first time i have heard if a vehicle being front wheel drive and engaging the rear wheels for 4wd. Front wheel drive generally tends to have better performance and steering control off-road. I like this idea.

This was great. I wanted the last box shaped Jeep that was less that $200 a month lol. Got the 2017 and this is excellent info.

Thanks for taking of your valuable time to make this video for us. Very helpful indeed. One question please, Is this system similar to the 4x4 in the smaller new jeep 2015, 2016 Renegades, or are these more rigorous for off-roading? Thanks again.

Great video!! Would you say the Patriot is a fairly well-built reliable vehicle? I have an Xterra for off road use, but considering a Patriot for winter in Michigan for everyday use.

Hi great video 👍

I have a quick question, so my Patroit is a2013. I upped the tyres to a more bulky size. Both back and front are 17” but back is more bulker then front.

Drove it for 2 years no problems. Then boom the car started make so noise like a bearing that are about to go. What to the dealer they replaced the transfer case. 6months down the line the noise come back. Car has been standing for month now. Any ideas?

Thought of replacing the input shaft bearing…

I had an issue with my 2009 patriot.. I put ignition on and sudenly 4 or 5 dash lights came on, including abs and 4wd!.. I start to drive, after some time I had a knock (similar like you have then you put low gear on high speed), alll dashbord lights dissapeared execpt 4wd!, but it dissapeared after some time... have no idea what it was... :(

2:54 It's hard to believe that drive shaft isn't connected to the rear with a universal joint. Just watched a video about a Toyota Sienna and it has a universal joint in back.

I have a 2017 Jeep patriot. Dealer told me there are no transmission filter in this. It’s a ladatude 4x4. Also got a noise in the drive train a humming noise. Took drive line out checked carrier bearing. All 4 wheel bearing changed. Could it be the transfer unit
