In this video Doctor O'Donovan explains key things you need to know about heat rash (also known as miliaria) in babies. Heat rash is also known as eccrine miliaria, heat rash, prickly heat, or sweat rash, and is a frequently seen skin condition triggered by blocked eccrine sweat glands and ducts. We also look at examples of heat rash on different skin types with example photos.

SYMPTOMS

The symptoms of heat rash are:
- small, raised spots
- an itchy, prickly feeling
- mild swelling
- The rash often looks red, but this may be less obvious on brown or black skin.
The symptoms of heat rash are often the same in adults and children.

Heat rash TREATMENT:

The main thing to do is keep your skin cool so you do not sweat and irritate the rash.

To keep your skin cool

1. wear loose cotton clothing
2. use lightweight bedding
3. take cool baths or showers
4. drink plenty of fluid to avoid dehydration

To calm the itching or prickly feeling

1. apply something cold, such as a damp cloth or ice pack (wrapped in a tea towel) for up to 20 minutes
2. tap or pat the rash instead of scratching it
3. do not use perfumed shower gels or creams

Thanks for sharing. This happened with my infant son a few weeks ago and I was so scared, but good to know it’s not serious.

Hi doc, my names Joey. I have a question for you if you wouldn’t mind taking a minute? I’ve been having different issues that aren’t severe for about 6 months now. Started with a. Change in bowel habits, looser stool. Sometimes I’ll have semi normal stool though. Recently I’ve noticed a couple of flat stools, mixed within normal poop.very mild pain when I eat, and random pain without reason, this happens at least 4 days a week, the pain isn’t always in the same place, just different parts of Bowles/stomach area. I’ve been checked for lumps in my abdomen but nothing found, I’ve had a blood test about a month ago and everything came back normal apart from b12 so I take tablets for that now. My question is just general, not asking for a doctors appointment experience. In a blood test, if you had cancer (bowel cancer) although there isn’t blood tests for that, would my blood test show something that is not right, like high white blood cells, or inflammation? Or could you have bowel cancer and it be completely normal?
