FR fae in these romantasy books have *nothing* in common with actual mythology. If anything, they're closer to Tolkien elves: aka long-lived and very pretty. (Except even Tolkien's elves have way more going on than that)

I mean the thing about fae creatures is that they've always come in lots of different types. The only connecting thing I can think of is that they're whimsical is either a weird or scary way🤣 how they're just also whimsical in a horny way💀

In actual mythology and lore form games like D&D, fae creatures CAN be beautiful but they're actually quite often horrifying. Hags are a good example of this in the D&D universe. When people hear the word "fae" the first image that pops into a person's head is usually a beautiful pixie with pretty wings that flutters about causing mischief. While these DO exist in the universe of D&D and old mythology, Hags are kind of the antithesis of what most would expect from a fae creature. They're ugly, mean, manipulative, and use their knowledge to entice humans into deals that always end the human getting the short end of the stick. That's just one example. I actually rather like the idea of fae creatures being these wicked monsters and evil magical humanoid people that live in the forest and come from a world different form ours.

If you tell me a character is fae, I will assume they can't cross running water, and they can't lie.

And if they lie or cross running water, it's not fae.

Holy Hades, When I wrote a ‘fae’ book the races in it were different in each court but the one thing they had in common was that they were humanoid beings with some kind of power. There are a few courts where the race is very specific like centaurs or Charmers (basically land sirens). In others they would be mostly human but have a humanoid trait. in some cases it had something to do with their powers, ex. The people with water powers had gills and webbed hands. In other cases the trait was random, ex. A tail, horns, or natural tattoos/markings on their bodies.
I’m 15 so this world has some growing to do but I’m excited to explore it deeper.
PS, there is zero spicy scenes shown but at the end the main couple “mates under *insert god here*” and are branded with matching symbols of said god they were mated under that will protect their union and punish whoever doesn’t honor their mating. You could read between the lines and say that they were mated through sex because they next scene has them in bed together admiring the symbols marking their mating but nothing more serious than kissing is shown in the story it’s self.
