I was thinking about buying one to play my digital movies which are in .mkv format. However, I can play them right on my LG OLED TV with Dolby Atmos, Dolby Vision, DTS-X, DTS-HD etc! In my opinion the NIVIDIA Shield Pro isn't worth $200. Now what I would do is upgrade my Apple TV if Apple decides to add USB ports on the next generation Apple TV 4K but I already have the Apple TV 4K 3rd generation.

My 2015 Shield still runs great and has out ran anything else I’ve tried. Firestick, fire tv, android boxes all got dominated by my shield.

As someone who's suffered with an Amazon Firestick for the past several years, and watched them becoming more and more gestapo (like Apple), disabling user choices with each new update, I was totally happy to dump them for the Shield! Perhaps some other boxes like the ONN could work for you, but I doubt any would still match up with Nvidia's hardware, even today.

There is really no high end media/streaming device to replace it yet. Google is releasing a device for $100 with a weak SoC.

My Nvidia Shield 2019 still runs smoothly, no problems. System hasn't had updates but the apps do have regular updates.

Side note: Would love for you to do a video about how to download M3U8 files.

My 2015 Shield is still going strong, its a bit slower on boot but once running its fine.

Everything you mention has some validity to it. But what's a good alternative that supports ALL the DoVi formats, ALL the UHD audio codecs (also 5.1/7.1/9.1) and can upscale?

So I don’t think you mentioned that the shield pro is a great way to not have to be running a pc all the time as a Plex server. I don’t really use my shield to stream, but it never fails to keep Plex server running for my family who want to stream from my movie collection. Again, probably a niche market, but I don’t think you’re going to find a $200 pc that works as well at delivering content.

I have an old Roku box and now if I click a few more buttons to quickly, it reboots. I am looking in Nvidia Shield as a replacement. You are telling not to buy, because Tegra chip is to old, but then towards the end, you saying the chip is for power users.
Also, you have not provided any alternatives. I was expecting more info. Now I need to search for someone who has done a better job in explaining way this is not a good buy.

My 2017 nvidia shield has been acting up, with frequent crashes and frying a usb stick or two.

I wish nvidia would release an updated version. I know it will probably go on sale to clear up the stock, I will buy it and then they will release a new one. Happened to me with the steam deck lcd vs oled.

I am contemplating using a mini pc box but haven't found any good setup to use that my kid would be able to easily use as well as a shield.

The chip is still out right faster than everything other than maybe a recent Apple TV. It’s the support of the latest codecs like AV1 that are aging it, not the speed.

For anyone having performance issues you can rectify this in 10-15 mins by opening the Shield, blowing out all the dust and repasting the chip. Plenty of YouTube tutorials out there, this is a VERY simple process!

I would not buy a Nvidia Shield unless they release a new one with a more updated processor. I have a Formuler Z11 Pro Max is the go to box. Better processor, better RAM and storage, and regular updates. The shield price is too high for that old device.
