Lancelot was basically someone's OC that we accept as canon. Authrian lore is fun like that

Welsh cult hero, Romanised Celtic warlord/general, and at least one other cultural 'source' for Arthur - whether historical figure, legend or myth (or all 3) - make him a fascinating cipher for various causes/beliefs in different Ages.

Also fascinating that the French traditions laud Lancelot, while the English traditions honour Bors ... it's a fascinating, convoluted rabbit hole of history, mythology and literature.

Arthurian Lore, it's fanfic all the way down.
I enjoyed learning about Sir Lanval and the handmaid with the well made pair
Of basins.

Holy cow! I'm currently in the process of writing both an Arthurian legend series of books, and one about Robin Hood and I started freaking out because Eleanor of Aquitaine was the mother of Richard Lionheart (aka King Richard l), the absent king in Robin Hood legends and now my fictional, historical worlds are overlapping.

P.S. I started jumping up and down and screaming "Oh my gosh" repeatedly upon watching this, and my sister poked her head into my mom's room and was like, "My sister's having a book attack" 😂😅

This makes me think that the Fate (nasu verse) version somehow makes much more sense as a re-imagining of the lore than anyone realized

Modern arthurian legends were added on by Elenor, but they’ve been culturally evolving way before her too.

Arthur is a Briton legendary figure first and a chivalric knight second.

... I now see so many connections to daytime soap operas.

Most historians studying the time actually believe he isn't a historic figure. His earliest mention is from documents 300 years after his supposed life wich is a pretty bad basis.
But still a cool video
Overly sarcastic productions has a great episode on ithe topic btw.

Lancelot was entirely fictional and owes his existence in the stories to those romance girlies too.

Not 100% right, but close enough

Arthurian myth appear far earlier than their success as romance (that said, yes, chretien did launch the success of the myth). Also we are not sure about the ambrosius warlord thing, it’s barely an educated guess.

Alienor and daughter did push for the Arthurian myth, but it seems far more plausible that Chretien de Troye was already on it before them

There was different vision of what courtly love should be. By order of apparition :
- Platonic outside of marriage : spicy, but socially acceptable. Also very poetsy and probably inspired from andalous poetry tradition.

- Physical, but inside marriage : also spicy but accepted (often there are some urdle to get the marriage approved) Chretien de Troye personal favorites, or at least the one he defaults to when free of writing his story how he wish (Erec, Tristan, Perceval. Even Cliges has to pass for dead so she can get physical with the one she love after marriage)

- Physical, outside of marriage : one of alienor daughter (Marie of Champagne) commanded a few romance like this. The most famous being lancelot (written by chretien de Troye) all book dedicated to her while she was married to her uncle (complicated story her father remarried, and promised his daughter to the brothers of her new wife), with her husband being mostly in crusade during their wedding, while she was managing the lands and holding court (one of the most powerful court of France, on par with the royal one). Chretien de Troye was so against, she had to bring another author to write the spicy scene in the book.

- Platonic inside marriage : brough in by the killjoy monk after Arthurian myth was such a hit, they decided to put a hold on all that gallant stuff.

Arthurian romance was basically heavy duty fanfiction

The historicity of King Arthur is highly disputed, but it is most believe he was just a figure from welsh myth, as historically accurate as Herakles or Perseus
