The Malay is not a conquering/raid kind of people, they're pacifist Austronesian seafaring people and love trading. This is one of the reason why Malaysia had good geography, their ancestors chose to settle down and build a civilization in this strategic location only for trading. The so called "Straits Settlements" by the Brits like Penang, Malacca and Singapore is a bustling international trading port in ancient time.

That is why this peninsular always attract colonizer, either in ancient time or modern world war. It's a really strategic sea route between west and east.

Note:
Malaysia is the only country that has territories both in mainland asia and the malay archipelago.
Malaysia is protected from volcanoes, tsunami and strong typhoon as usually indonesia and Philippines takes the heat.
Malaya (mainland asia) gained independence in 1957 while Sabah and Sarawak (Borneo) gained independence in 1963, which is when this three countries unified to create Malaysia.
