Yes, we almost never use the terms RoK and DPRK, it's always South Korea and North Korea. So a random person on the street getting them wrong would be sort of understandable. But if you're commenting the opening ceremony of the Olympics, you need to put in a little bit of effort to get stuff right. I'm honestly baffled how they could get it wrong considering the team was literally carrying a huge banner with the correct name on it.

Didn't the "Republic of Korea" just host an Olympics a few years ago? You would think that the folks in charge in the IOC and Paris IOC would be on top of this.

Trust me sir, it's not a revenge, it's incompetence.

The French are fed up themselves, some ending up popcorn in their hands observing the extent of the disaster.

Olympics is an international event
not an elementary school’s event😅

It’s severe disrespect without an official apology,

South Korea is the one that is actually democratic, even though North Korea is the one with the word "democratic" in its name, so it makes sense that some people would get confused.

But a simple google search would show you which is which... There is no excuse when it's your job to be accurate.

I am french and this stupid mistake is bothersome. Their apologies didn't make things better to my eyes. Why they didn't have no clues that "democratic" word is or was used by non democratic countries, such as old french colony like Algeria or Congo, ex belgium colony... Officiels de paris, terrez-vous sous votre ignorance crasse.

As a german growing up in west germany I can perfectly understand that south korean people are upset. The east, the socialists also called themselves 'democrats', German Democratic Republic, GDR. Seems like an established pattern.

I'm French and live in Tahiti and my wife is from the Republic of Korea. We were shocked like everyone else. The Paris Olympics 2024 will be remembered for a while.
I am sorry for every South Koreans.

Sunglasses and beard guy is right to me, the politics, the olympic committee and the organization should be held accountable for their incompetence and they should make a public apology.

They've been doing a mess for years in France already, and now this.

Too many unacceptable things are coming along these Olympic Games...

2:12 The Translation is misleading. He doesn’t say “Do they have a problem with South Korea?”. He says “What could have been the prblem?”.

For most people from Central and Eastern Europe, especially from a bit older generations (like over 40 years old), I think the difference between "Republic" and so-called "Democratic People's Republic" is obvious. Because all the communist states, at the times of the Iron Curtain in Europe, were also called like that - so the People's Republics. And in all the communist constitutions there were also such phrases as "people's democracy" or "proletariat's dictatorship" and other rubbish - because in fact it was just one big lie, in communist countries there was no democracy at all, and these were also ordinary people, including workers, who wanted so much the communism to fall (which finally was possible in 1989).

The point is that it is an official WORLDWIDE event. Instead of just guessing, a simple Google search could give you the answer. And apparently they also mixed up two other countrys' national anthem. C'mon.

South Korean people, if you are listening to this dont feel bad. I promise you that you and your culture are loved. When I was still active duty in the US Army I was at one point stationed in Camp Humphrey's. And I completely fell in love with your country. To anyone who asks me which country I loved serving in the most. I always say South Korea. Europe was beautiful too. But there is just something about South Korea that makes it much more special.

The apology wasn’t great, either. “We’re sorry, but” isn’t an apology.
