Growing quinoa plant in my Backyard Garden (watch in HD)

Here's a side note about quinoa. They grow pretty fast and a few of them got purple while others stayed green. Plants tend to release a defense mechanism for survival and can change and/or adapt themselves during the cold winter months.

NOTE: I never ate the quinoa crop. I tossed all the quinoa back into the ground. It was a nasty grow in the end. But I did love the experience. Tomatoes were delicious by the way. I ate them right from the vine 😊

Thanks for watching

Just a tip, compost does its thing quicker if you have it in a air tight something, then when the sun hits the tub, the veggie scraps break down quicker. If it's out in the open like that, the heat doesn't have as much as an effect. I saw on one blog that you can put any scraps in a blender and make compost smoothie, and chuck that straight on your garden. Nice garden too! Looks healthy and lush!

Wonderful indeed! I have never grown Quinoa so far but I eat it almost every day like other people eat rice. I am planning to grow some this year. God bless!🙂

Very similar to lambs quarters. I believe the leaves of quinoa are edible.

I will try to grow quinoa but live in Oregon. I have a greenhouse but will probably have to wait till spring again. I love this stuff for breakfast!

Thanks a lot GP.
The nutrients my friend bought at the hydroponic store was a Liquid nutrient additive for soil. He has a hydro set up for cloning, but not for full growing plants. But its still pretty cool :)
Thanks for stopping by. Ill check out the vid asap!

Cool video Rick. I've read that quinoa doesn't pollinate properly if its too hot. Thinking about trying some here in South Africa, but its very hot & dry here in the summer. Gets pretty cold and wet in the winter. Looks like you're working your soil real good. You can never add too much OM to sandy soil! I've got clay soil, which is very rich in nutes, but needs extra OM to help it drain better.
Nice looking toms too dude. Keep it up!

Thanks for the reply. My entire garden IS compost. I might try this, but I'd have to start them inside. I would be so happy if I could grow my own.

A very INTERESTING and IRIE Upload, thanks for sharin' this upload of what quinoa looks like and its ability to adapt to your local clime, up here on the central plateau, its semi-arid with a rainy season from june to september and while its hot here during the spring/summer, winters are mild(70s to 60s°F), so i'm thinkin' maybe quinoa would grow well over here, ....when ya tell us your 'maters are growing in sand and horse manure, ...that reminded me of LDSPrepper, planting yams in sand and sawdust and you should see the bumper crop of yams he got! Thumbs up and greetings to ya from Querétaro! :)

Hey Rasta Rick. We should all be free to grow and live as we want. Lessons from tomatoes. I love quinoa, but never thought of growing it. How much did you end up getting out of these few plants? Where did you get seeds? I would love to grow my own. Do you let them dry on the plant before you harvest? You got me excited about this.

Put some waxed paper under the tomatoes on the ground so they don't rot.  Also, everyone, check out the Back To Eden movie explaining how to use wood chips to naturally and without work improve and make more soil!  Very exciting.  Back to Eden!

Well I guess it depends on where you live & what you want to grow. I live in florida so I can basically start growing anytime i'd like to, But its best to plant after winter, when its sunny. Yes, I prepare the soil Every time I plant into the ground. Its not a matter of me having to prepare the soil each year.. its a matter of wanting, I love doing this :) Some seasons I dont grow anything. I just let the soil rest & till it the next season. Best to make your own compost, thats the best soil.

:) thank you for the wonderful comment. If i were to guess the measurement, i may have collected about a bowl full of quinoa. They grew mainly in manure, which promoted a lot of leaf growth. But i bet if i were to have threw in some compost, my yield would have been a lot higher. Theres always next season tho :) I got the seeds from my local farmers market store. (just basically bought a bag of quinoa) and planted the seeds. When drying my plant, i pulled from the ground & laid them in the sun
