UK Mainline and Heritage Railway Highlights 2022
Показать описание
With the year drawing to a close, we can take the time to look back at some of our favourite events and moments from over the past 12 months.
2022 marked a number of important anniversaries for the railways: From the centenary of the merger between the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway and the LNWR in 1922, celebrated by a gathering of former L&Y locos and LNWR Coal Tank 1054 at the East Lancashire Railway, to the celebration of Queen Elizabeth II's 70 year reign, seeing the debated repaint of Rebuilt Bullied Light Pacific 34027 'Taw Valley' into purple at the Severn Valley Railway. On the mainline, Cross Country celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Class 43 HST on Cross Country routes, seeing the repaint of 43184 into InterCity Executive Livery. Barrow Hill Roundhouse also took the time to celebrate the former Staveley Shed's 150th anniversary, delayed by two years due to Covid, with the resident Deltic Preservation Society also celebrating 40 years since the retirement of the Class 55 Deltics and the formation of the group in 1982.
The year welcomed many locomotives back into traffic, most popular of which was undoubtedly LNER A4 Pacific 4498 'Sir Nigel Gresley', temporarily sporting Wartime Black Livery and making appearances at the Severn Valley Railway and North Yorkshire Moors Railway Steam Galas, in addition to a number of mainline tours. First built Class 37 D6700 also returned to service at the Great Central Railway in the spring, much to the delight of many diesel locomotive fans. In April, Didcot Railway Centre also welcomed GWR Castle Class 4079 'Pendennis Castle' back in steam, the first time in the UK since 1977, following her return from Australia in 2000. Another Swindon Sister, GWR Hall Class 4930 'Hagley Hall', made her fresh from overhaul debut at the Severn Valley Railway's Autumn Steam Gala.
2022 was also a year that saw a number of exciting meetings of locomotives: Double Stanier Steam came to the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway this year, with 45596 'Bahamas' and 46100 'Royal Scot' running together at the Spring Steam Gala, a collection of Penrhyn Quarry locomotives at the Statfold Barn Railway, alongside the railway's vast collection of Narrow Gauge Steam, Scottish Steam down south with Caledonian Railway locos 419 and 828 meeting at the Spa Valley Railway, and Class 37s Galore at DRS's Crewe Gresty Bridge depot, with heritage liveried 37218, 37401, 37419 and 37425 all in attendance.
2023 is already setting up to be an exciting year on the railways, watch this space...!
A very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all!
