Beginner Salsa Dancing: The 7 Building Blocks for Everything

1. Basic Steps
We'll show you 4 salsa basics (although there's more). Get comfortable shifting your weight with these easy salsa steps, coordinating your weight shifts to the timing, and learning how to lead and follow the transitions between them.

2. Right Turn
A basic single turn to the follow's right. This is the first turn you learn and it sets you up for learning cross body lead outside turns and multiple turns.

3. Left Turn
A basic single turn to the follow's left. The second turn you learn so you can go both ways. This sets you up for cross body lead inside turns.

4. Cross Body Lead
The foundational move to this linear style of salsa, where the lead gives the follow the line of dancing allowing her to cross in front and arrive at the other side.

5. Hesitation / Block / Check
You stop or block the follow's movement and send her back in the other direction. You'll use this concept a ton as you advance.

6. New York Walk
A variation of the cross body lead where the follow pivots to the right instead of the left to finish the move.

7. Change of Place / Enchufa
The simplest way for the lead and follow to switch positions.

Almost everything in linear salsa is built-off these 7 easy salsa moves.

The counts on screen were very helpful! I keep listening and moving for 8 counts, this will help me hear the music better. I think that's my big block.

Very excited to hear that you'll be adding new dances to the site (other than salsa and bachata). What's the next dance?

Reading throught the comments I feel like I should say- I tried learning Portuguese for years on apps/books/youtube, and did OK, but it never felt natural... I visited Brazil recently and decided to consciously not be self conscious and just converse with people. I learned more about fluency in one day than years of trying to get the grammar right by myself... it's the same thing with dance. Nothing makes fluent sense until you have a partner and decide it's ok to mess up. It's ok to look stupid. Just laugh. Gotta dive in

Sweet Robin. Very nice. I've just doing lots of basics and getting some turns by myself through lock down and am so looking forward to having a woman on the other end of my arms. I so love that these simple basics are so so sweet. Keep doing it man.

Question: I started salsa on1, I am transitioning to on2. During social dancing, what are some tips for counting to avoid losing time (falling back on1)? Those certain songs that are hard to hear clear instrumentation like the Congas, or clave is my current sticking point

Nice video, thanks! Question: If you assume that a beginner knows where the "1" is in the music, and also the difference to the "5" (which implies that they also notice clave changes) - what's the name for the level for people who can't hear all that yet in Salsa music?

I understand every follow step here, except her left turn appears difficult. After completing her 1, 2, 3, she steps forward on 5, pivots back on 6, and turns quickly on 7, stepping back on 1. There seems not to be an 8 pause. It took me 20 replys to see how she did this step because the 7 to 1 transition is really fast.

Has anyone with a type of Aspergers syndrome, etc, ever been able to dance salsa? The problem is people with this condition like myself have absolutely zero balance.
