Welcome to Oymyakon, the COLDEST City in the WORLD!

Oymyakon is situated in Siberia, Russia. The settlement was started in the 1920's by reindeer herders who watered their reindeer in the thermal spring which gives the town its name, Oymyakon "Water that doesn't freeze".

Around 500 people are living in Oymyakon but to be honest it's more about surviving than living.
The average temperature in the colder months is -40 degrees Fahrenheit, there are only 3 warmer months, with temperatures averaging 50 degrees Fahrenheit and the record low was recorded in 1923 when temperatures dropped to -96.

The houses don't have plumbing because the water would freeze in the pipes, so toilets are simple pits with a roof and door over them.

The village has its own heating plant that burns coal none stop to heat water, which is then pumped through the village pipework.

When outside, they have to keep their car's engine running, all the time, even when refilling at the gas station, if not, the fuel would freeze in seconds making it impossible to start again.

They have a school, to which the kids have to go every day unless temperatures drop below -58f.

Their diet is mainly meat because the ground is permanently frozen so no vegetables can be grown, this Permafrost also makes gravedigging a lengthy experience. first, they light a bonfire to defrost the ground, then dig down until the hit permafrost again, and then repeat. the process of digging a grave can take days.

There is no cell phone coverage, but that's mainly because no one has made a cell phone that can work in such a cold climate.

Even though it's the coldest town in the world and probably the hardest to live in, it is possibly the most beautiful landscape on the planet!

I visited Sweden some years back and it was - 25° lemme tell you that it's freaking cold!!! As an African that had decades of experience with winter. That temperature nearly broke me. 😅I refused to leave the house for anything but food and I made sure to buy enough to last me for 2 weeks.

Wow! Very fascinating. I applaud their courage for surviving in the harsh COLD weather. Definitely NOT for me. I'm a southern girl. Gotta have LOTS of sunshine and mild winters. :)

Growing up in upstate NY, and regular dealing with extreme winter with temps -15, i commend these people for their strength. Its hard to survive the cold even with all the modern tech we have, but to poop in a freezing hole and not have running are the strongest community living. I moved to Southern California as soon as I could lol. I never got used to the cold and never will

My first time visiting New York during the winter is my first extreme cold temperature experience and it hated it! The temperature was -19 degrees and I did not want to leave the house for NOTHING not even food but I had to of course go get food, what sucked the most is One time I had to walk 3 blocks or more to the store for the groceries and by the time I got to the store my pants were stuck to my skin on my legs due to the temperature and icy winds during my walk!!! I dreaded having to leave the store and walk back, luckily I had money to grab a cab back so the cab was the way to go after that experience!!!!

I lived in a hamlet in Nunavut in the Arctic Circle. It was extremely cold from October through July then just cold August/September/ LOL

I went to Norway once to spend Christmas with my friend and her family . It was -28 in town and -33 ski-ing ! We all went cross country ski-ing on a mountain , I only had the tiny tip of my nose showing, which got frost bite . My fiend’s family owned a cabin on the mountain, . Her father insisted we drink brandy and eat chocolate to keep us warm and give us energy. It was eerily beautiful as it gets dark by 1pm and we had a lantern and torches for light .
I can’t imagine living in the conditions that people do in the video. I suspect if the people and town had money, they could have a better infrastructure and proper facilities to deal with these extreme temperatures. These people deserve a Go Fund Me page (, more than someone wanting money for something frivolous ! ). Where all these Hollywood celebs who always say they want to donate money to worthwhile causes? I guess this isn’t trendy enough for them ! Lol!
