I don't ballast since it makes a mess and later adjustment a pain in the ass and serves no real purpose for small models.

hey, if anyone else is searching for how to build a model railway layout try Pycanta Model Railroaders Protocol (just google it ) ? Ive heard some great things about it and my brother in law got great results with it.
