Before I saw deer in person I just thought they were just simply brown. Now I live in a place that I see deer a lot and have seen up close the grey, gold, brown, red, black and whites of the individual hairs. The variety in color helps them blend in to just about any background when they freeze, it is almost magical. I have often wondered how to paint this kind of fur. Thanks for sharing.

I know this is an older video but I just got back into painting...it's been a good 30 years since I picked up a brush...I was never particularly great at it, but I enjoyed it...I have been working on a white tailed buck for several weeks now...has not looked right or finished....I tried this technique and it is transforming my painting....a ton of work but so worth it...thank you for taking the time to make this video...super helpful! I was painting a deer years ago in almost the same way, but not because I knew it was the right way to do it but because I just couldn't think of any other, better way to do it. Now I see that even masters like Chuck Black do it like this and that makes me proud. :D By the way, for all the lazy people out there, try several brushes. I used an old brush that gave me 4 or 5 regular dots in one stroke. It still takes a lot of patience and effort, but you do save time by not painting every single dot individually.
