I’m currently in 12th class and in my classes here in Germany about half of the students are using tablets. Interestingly except for 1 or two students we are all using iPads and with GoodNotes having become the standard app for note taking we can just airdrop worksheets and stuff from one to another. Now there are even some teachers that have adopted and use iPads with GoodNotes.

For me the best note taking app has to be one note. Ive tried ALL of them by now. It is completely cross platform and you can put links to youtube videos, images, you can record audios, has a hierarchical structure to the pages, etc. However the only two things that are missing and i would absolutely love to see are: 1. a ruler and 2. the option to toggle on or off wether the page is infinite or with a defined size.

I'm a long term Notability user. A couple of features that I use a lot that you don't mention are the scrolling magnifier that allows me to write large into a small space and keeps everything lined up nicely, and the scanner that allows squared up pages or slides to be entered quickly. I also use the iPhone app to view notes on the go. The scrolling magnifier is the feature that sold me on Notability in the first place.

As a teacher in Germany I use GoodNotes 5 for all of my classes and lessons. No more cupboard!. Some of my students are using iPads and also GoodNotes. I tried Notability as well, but still gravitate to GoodNotes. You can't go wrong with any of them, it's just a matter of taste.

I’ve purchased my iPad about 2 months ago so I took a look at several apps and settled for Apple Notes and GoodNotes.

I used notability in years 2-4 of my degree. It’s something I brought up in my DSA assessment as I struggle a lot with dissociative episodes from GAD. Due to my dissociation, a lot of the technology help overlapped with help for students with dyslexia. I wish more note taking apps had the recording feature purely from an accessibility standpoint! The assessor made a note of it so she could recommend it as something DSAs could offer. Notability recordings made bad mental health days/weeks so much more manageable for me since I had a recording, even if I couldn’t remember being in the lecture. It’s the only thing tying me to it rather than GoodNotes.

I've always felt like GoodNotes is severely underrated in the "tech and productivity" space (big on the journaling side and teacher youtube, though)

I've acutally been using GoodNotes, but I think for my Masters I will be switiching to Noteful. The Audio recording and replay function is killer for lectures. I do hope GoodNotes will add a recorder as well till summer term 2023.

It’s not just note taking apps that have subscriptions, in app purchases are like a cancer spreading through the App Store. Every app does it and most do it just to keep you from being bombarded by ads. I would prefer to pay one price for the initial purchase like procreate which is an excellent artist tool, over paying a monthly prescription for an app that I rarely use. I have so many monthly subscriptions and all those 99 cents and 1.99 monthly charges add up in a month.

As far a apple notes goes, I love it it’s so easy to use and I prefer using apps created by apple that come as part of your iPad purchase.

Best review I have come across, you have laid out the features and preferences in a streamlined logical way. Sounds good. Thanks.

OneNote is the one for me. It has apps for my iPad, MacBook, Windows laptop, and Android phone, and I use all of them and sync between all of them.

Man, I really wish there was an app that had the same effect as the Caligraphy pens in procreate - they kind of 'round off' your pen strokes and it makes it alot more pleasing to look at!

I got notability before the subscription model came in but only really use it for marking up pdfs. Find myself using the Notes app more and more. It will be interesting to see if there are any new features at WWDC.

Great Video
I would rate Notability No.1 if it were not on a sub model (just charge me more for a one time purchase, id be happy to pay 25 dollars) I just REALLY don't like the idea of having to pay every year/month for a app that doesn't change much over the years. I can see the point of subscription for something that is constantly updating or changing in content, for example, streaming services, learning platforms, or creative content platform like Envato elements.
I JUST HATE THAT NOTABILITY NEEDS A OMG I am so angry!!!! WHY AM I SO ANGRY OVER A STUPID APP!!!!

Love your videos. I don't even use my iPad for note taking, but I still enjoy hearing your thoughts and your overall presentation style. Thanks for sharing!

I just had enough from standard Apple Notes!

Story:
A month ago I got into a situation where I lost the last part of a important handwritten school note. I thought that it was because iCloud sync, iPad haven’t synchronised the last 5-10 minutes handwritten part meanwhile I opened it on my iPhone and continued it by typing.
Fair enough, user error, it happens. I moved the whole school library to the “on iPad” section, just to be sure it saves everything locally so I don’t need to worry about sync.
A month later today I wanted to study (of course that’s why I wrote it down) and surprisingly half an hour (!!) notes missing from last week’s uni lesson. HOW?! It is saved LOCALLY. Fortunately I made screenshots about it to send it to classmates.

Conclusion:
I need a new app for sure this is ridiculous!

Sum up:
Don’t use Apple Notes for handwritten notes, watch this video!
I really liked your video and the useful comments so big thumbs up for you and the community!
Thank you all! ❤

I started off with Notability as a recommendation from a friend and I also think that it has the best tactile feel out there. However there are some setbacks for me which have made me switch entirely to Apple Notes and I don’t regret it at all. The biggest one for me is Shortcuts support. Notability has 0 such support and also no usable widgets which make it completely unusable for me. It’s also weird when scanning documents, and sharing notes is a pain. So yeah, if you’re outside the students world - Notability is not for you.
