Is Glue Stronger Than Wood? No!

You cannot simply say that glue is stronger than wood (or that wood is stronger than glue) because wood is not a homogenous material. It is a composite, made up long fibers held together by a glue-like polymer. The fibers are very strong; the polymer is relatively weak. More important, the fibers give the wood “grain”, and this unique composite structure makes the wood stronger parallel to the grain than it is across it. The strength of a glue joint depends on the orientation of the wood grain in the adjoining parts much more than it does on the glue itself.

This is why back in engineering class we were told not to overuse hot glue on the foam. The foam was just two sheets of paper with weak foam in-between. The power came from stretching it across.

My guy, you need a PBS show. I learned more in 2 videos than I ever thought I would about carpentry. I don’t even do carpentry, I work with electronics, but I learned something new, and that’s the important part.
