REPLACING BELTS in a SONY CASSETTE WALKMAN - It's Easy!

A quick how-to video demostrating belt replacement in a Sony Walkman. In this example, we're using a WM-EX102, but it will be similar for any of the later cassette Walkman models with snap together cases. Belts turn to goo over time, so if your Walkman has quit playing tapes, chances are the belt has perished. Let's get you fixed up!

oh thanks for this, I have the EX-404 which is one of the very last ones from Sony and hadn't used it since late 90s. Now I do have some new tapes I want to check out and I think it has a belt problem for definite. I hope it's very similar inside so I just bought a new belt for Sony Walkmans inc. EX404 and waiting for it to arrive and try out the above. Thanks again!

Hi, thanks for the video! Any chance if you know whether the belt diameter is 0.7mm or 1mm?

EDIT:
I have found that service manuals for many models are available on Google. The manuals have a part number for the belt, which can be used to (if you're lucky) find the correct dimensions of the belt, or to find a specific replacement. These replacements seem to be listed for cheaper compared to just searching for a replacement belt with the model number (but buying a bulk pack is still the cheapest option).

Additionally, these service manuals will have additional details like how to open the case which some of you might find helpful.

longshot here, but I'm replacing the belt in the exact same model and when I opened the case, a metal piece fell out.. looks like the positive end of the battery holder but eith four arms to it. Any ideas where that might go? Poked around the circuit board and I can't make out where it would fit.

ive got the higher end japanese model of this in black and red. Both belts are long gone, Im thinking il just measure, take off a bit and 3d print some tpu belts.

I got one of these plasticy type Walkmans (a WM-BF22 from 1988) off ebay about a year ago. The guy said he had replaced the belt. But now after many months of listening to it working perfectly, the wow and flutter is just awful. can't listen to audio books or anything. I think maybe the belt is defective. But how do you know what size of belt will fit or where to buy reliable quality rubber bands?
