Keep in mind that some walkmans have screws on the back that you have to unscrew first!

The right way to open up a Walkman to replace the belt and lubricate the mechanism.

Always be patient and take your time while opening your Walkman, and before you do. Try to locate the possible screws on the back and the tabs in the cassette bay. I hope this video helps!

Wish I found this earlier, but it still feels like these things aren't designed to be serviced - period. I used a flathead and pushed them all back (the side one down) and while it did unclip the back shell, it did a number on the small tabs and left them covered in war scars. Nothing structural I hope but if worst comes to pass then they may need replacing eventually. Other than that great vid, applies to basically everything as you say and this is a must-see for anyone

OMG! This so helped me out when i had to open up my EX-12 model. pretty much opens in the exact same spots. what was funny that once i popped it open and put the belt back on (so glad it didn't snap or stretch out beyond the point of it being good), but i saw EX-10 printed on the circuit board inside it. my only recommendation is that make sure the flathead is the right size to pop it open. the one i used was just a few mm big, but it worked and got the job done.

Thanks for this. Trying to see if I can repair a WM-FX453 that I bought and didn't know how to open it. Hopefully it can be fixed...

Sony Walkmans are definitely made to be easily serviceable. Their black Walkmans are definitely worth repairing because they have no crappy battery saving tech which somehow reduced the amp quality. They tend to sound really good compared to late models. That Aiwa you have also worth saving. They sounded great and the heads are of higher quality compared to Sony.

If you described how the clips worked it would help. do you push the taps foreword or back. do not seem to move for me.

Techmoan gave me the idea to try to service my old Walkman and you saved me with this video about the little tabs. I broke off the smallest of the three on my MX-122 but no real harm done I think.

As expected, the belt is all weak so I'll be ordering a replacement.
