Georgia's Deadly Abortion Ban: The Tragic Deaths of Two Black Women, Candi Miller & Amber Thurman

At least two women in Georgia have died since the state's six-week abortion ban went into effect after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Candi Miller and Amber Thurman, both Black women and mothers to young children, died after they were unable to access care for rare but typically treatable complications caused by medication abortion. We hear more from ProPublica editor Ziva Branstetter, whose publication reported on the preventable deaths of Miller and Thurman, and from reproductive justice advocate Monica Simpson. "We are in a maternal healthcare crisis in our state," says Simpson, the executive director of SisterSong, an organization that works throughout the southern United States on behalf of communities of color, which disproportionately suffer the impacts of restrictions on abortion care.

THANK YOU for mentioning the second woman who died. Most of the media has ignored this tragedy.

If men think this doe not affect them also, they are sadly mistaken. In the blink of an eye, you can become a widowed single parent, a grieving parent due to loss of your daughter or a grieving son. Be wise and help women vote these cruel people out of office.

They’re going to use this to say the abortion pill is not safe.

I lost my thridborn baby boy 8 months pregnant in March 2000, and even though I was using 3 different forms of birth control due to the fact I almost died... I found out I was 7 weeks pregnant in October 2000 when I miscarried one of my idenical twins. My heart goes out to all of the families that are suffering from the RePub's that are working overtime to take us back hundreds of years. 😞

Sue them. How dare you control anyone's body. Disgusting.

Thank you for covering this. HALF of Black women in the US are living in a state with an abortion ban.

Do the lives of black women matter enough to lose Trump Georgia? I hope so. We warned that this would happen. RIP Amber and Candi.

Ladies 4B movement is essential. No more casual access to our bodies especially when we have to be forced to carry a child.

I'm thankful for the report and may it be shared everywhere. May their names not die forgotten. America failed them

Depraved indifference is what it is… a truly socially sick idea when it is required of people by law.

What is incredible is there are people who call themselves pro life but will allow innocent women to die and don’t even see the irony.

There are common sense ways of dealing with the abortion issue that would’ve prevented these deaths. ..so very sad

I had 2 missed abortions(when you miscarry but don’t pass the products of conception)years ago. I would have died 200 years ago, and now(think about that statement for a minute)

SisterSong's spokesperson is very articulate. I lived in GA for several years and can attest to what she says..and I am white and high income. Unfortunately the abortion and womens maternal healthcare crisis is just an aspect of the bigger issue of mysogyny in healthcare. ALL women are victims of it. All women are at risk, but the 4 to 5 times higher risk experienced by women of color in maternal outcomes also prevails in healthcare more generally. I have a rare medical condition and have barely escaped death 4 times by doctors who dismissed my issues even knowing the validity of my underlying condition. Our system is rotten to the core and it is this rot that enables maternal healthcare deserts, DNC bans and abortion bans. Until women stand up and scream - not, "we wont go back", but rather, "NO MORE" this will not end. Abortion rights are just the tip of the iceberg. Its time to fight back actively with all the tools at our disposal.

Vasectomy needs to be handled by the government if they want to continue this OUTRAGE!
2 of my republican sisters had abortions back in the 70s.
My proud GA republican Mother told me in the 80s when I had a pregnancy scare telling me that I would have an abortion. I said no at 17!
Never been more proud to be an independent. If you respect women & love any females vote 💙 💙 God bless America.
