FEIJOA 💚 aka pineapple guava or guavasteen

These cute little fruits look just like mini guavas but are actually not! Feijoa’s are in the same Myrtle family with guava but are in a different genus. They originate in South America and are cold hardy plants that can withstand temperatures down to about 12° C.

Feijoa have a very strong and unique flavor that some people liken to pineapple (hence the name) and I tasted some bubblegum in there as well. The skin is thin and is edible but has the flavor of a bitter mint leaf so I prefer to slice long ways and scoop out the flesh.

You’ll know feijoas are ripe by giving them a gentle squeeze and feeling how soft they are. We wait until they are soft to the touch but not mushy. They will exude a strong sweet fragrance that will fill your whole kitchen, in the best way possible!

I have these growing and they don't taste like that at all, the skin and inner layer taste like old ladies face cream with perfume added! The inner part taste ok sort of like a cucumber crossed with a peach.
