Gjirokaster Castle is the second largest castle in Albania, is located in a valley between the Gjerë mountains and the Drino. The town is known locally for being the birthplace of revered Albanian writer, Ismail Kadare. Its more sinister claim to fame is as the site of Albania's most notorious political prison and the birthplace of Enver Hoxha, the country's one-time despotic leader.

The interesting castle of Gjirokastra is one of the places you shouldn't miss on your trip to Albania. Gjirokastër Castle is situated at a height of 336 metres. The castle dominates the town and overlooks the strategically important route along the river valley.

Two day (1 night) is ok, and 1 more day will be recommended if you want to see Gjirokaster as well as all the nature in the surrounding area.

The castle is open all year round
⏰April to September 09:00 to 19:00, October to March 09:00 to 17:00

Gjirokaster castle actually a Must visit place there, as Gjirokaster itself is not big at all. Well, if you are just walking around the civilised centre and visiting shops, that’s not big. But if you really hike to the mountain, there are plentiful of trails for you.

That’s why I said the castle is the easier way to overlook the whole town. 🥰 hope you enjoy.
