THE CASTLE OF GJIROKASTRA | Gjirokastër walking with history

The castle of Gjirokastra is one of the largest in Albania with an area of 2.5 hectares.The name of Gjirokastra and the castle are first mentioned in Byzantine writings in 1336, by the writer John Katakuzen. According to archaeologists, the castle dates from the 3rd or 4th century BC, but has undergone various additions and changes taking its present form by Ali Pasha Tepelena. The clock tower, one of the most attractive elements of the castle, was built exactly the way the pasha designed. At the entrance of the castle is the gallery of cannons and the collection of weapons collected since ancient times.
