Complete Binary to BCD Tutorial Part 1: What is double dabble?

This video is the start of a series in which I go through and explain how how to make all of the different types of Binary to BCD or BCD to binary converters which I have shown on this channel.

In this episode I explain what BCD is, how the double dabble algorithm works for converting binary numbers into BCD, then I build an example binary to BCD decoder.

(fun fact, all 37 minutes of the on camera bin to bcd converter build was done in one take with no editing... yay for improv commentary/redstoning).

'Double Dabbling', wow, i would never have thought of doing it that way, in the 8 bit calculator im making i was thinking about just encoding and decoding for every possible number (255) but this 'Double Dabbling' method is going to make my calc WAY faster!

I do have a question though, after the system has outputted each decimal in binary, how would you then convert that 4 bit binary number into a decimal digit, through like a 7 seg display or something along those lines, would you decode each bit of the 4 bit number into instructions for lighting up the display? or is there another better way of doing things? cheers!

Hey so I'm trying to integrate this into my computer, (lol 7 years after, still works, btw), and I was jsut wondering how after you have an input, how would you clock it 8 times specifically? I mean, it's very useful, but how would you clock it automatically?

How do you clock one of these automagically? I mean, you press the button and it does all the 8 shifts, then stops.
