You may be looking to settle down. Which leads us to today's question: Where is the best country to retire in Asia?

Here on the channel, we focus on South East Asia, which lists several different countries. As we know, the best country for an individual is a subjective experience. But let us first start with the visa. It is sometimes surprising to expats that not all countries provide retirement visas. The next category worth investigating is language. Singapore and the Philippines are notably the two best countries in Southeast Asia and are at the top globally for English speakers. However, one of the biggest considerations when investigating which is the best country to retire in Asia is the overall cost of living. Retirement visas are fairly inexpensive; however, expenses such as medical fees and insurance will need to be considered during retirement. Cambodia is one of the cheapest countries in Southeast Asia; however, its medical facilities haven't always been looked upon positively.

When choosing a country to retire in, it's always a good idea to look at the lifestyle and compare it with what you are ultimately looking for. Of course, you will find some very cost-effective ways of living across Asia; however, is it really in line with how you wish to spend your retirement?

So, with a few of these categories in mind, let us answer the ultimate question of which is the best country to retire in Asia?

At this moment, the Philippines is the best country to retire in Asia. This is because the cost of living is fair compared to other Asian countries, the English level is incredible, and the general happiness of expats remains high.

Cambodia and Vietnam are some of the cheapest countries to live in Asia, though they offer a different lifestyle. Some expats say it is much easier to live in the Philippines than in other South east Asian countries.

But what about money? Well, if money is not a problem, Singapore would likely take our winning spot, Also Thailand would potentially be the winner if this was asked a few years ago. Still, many expats have started to leave Thailand and venture into more promising areas such as the Philippines over the years. One expat told me that the Philippines is what Thailand was like 30 years ago.

All of this is subjective, and it isn't easy to base facts on opinionated information; however, from the expats I have interviewed and my experience, it is clear that those who can retire long term in a country do so because they feel at home. Feeling at home is a sense of belongingness where you can get to know others, be part of the community, and build a life for yourself. This is possible in many countries in South East Asia; however, it is much easier in some countries than in others.
