The Monster Hunter series saw great success in Japan, but over the past ten years it's struggled to catch on in Western Markets. That changed with the release of Monster Hunter World, Capcom's bestselling game of all time, with 70% of all sales coming from outside Japan.

How did the series change it's luck and break through to become mainstream in more than just its home country? This video seeks to explore and answer that question.

I’m so excited for “monster hunter 6 / world 2” whatever that ends up being. As a western player who’s been a fan since the first game World was what I had been hoping for prior to 2018. I prefer playing on devoted home consoles and World just tied together so many things I wished they’d do with the series for so long. Now that the series has gained a major following I can’t wait to see what’s released as a successor to World. Hopefully with alphabetically organized decoration lists lol

I'm so happy with how far the series has come. The game was definitely an underrated gem back then. I remember freedom unite was so hard, it never tell you how to climb the cliff in the snowy mountain map. I dropped the game, one year later i picked it up again, figured out how to climb the cliff by pressing circle, got hooked, and everything is history.

MHW is my first Monster Hunter game and It quickly became one of my favorite games

MHW is my first monster hunter game, it’s also the only game I can think of that I have put over 1000 hours into and still feel like I’m not done with it yet. I’ve convinced many friends to pick up the game and play with me during this last year of Covid and it’s connected all of us when we were all so far away. Even though I might not get a chance to play Rise, I can say that playing MHW is one of my favorite games perhaps of all time.

I don't usually comment on videos, but just wanted to say that this was very well done and to keep it up.

I remember my first interaction with the monster hunter games came with monster hunter 2 which i bought from a flee market and the game was completely in japanese. I couldn't understand a thing in the game but somehow through trial and error i learned what all the icons meant and what the quests were telling me to do (though the usual fetch and egg-hunt quests took a bit more trial and error). Years later i've followed the series through the psp, 3ds and wii era playing most if not all of the major releases and becoming a massive Capcom fan through their other series to boot. Seeing the series and Capcom becoming such a massive name in the industry feels like a life long dream coming true for both Capcom and us their fans. I'll probably never stop playing Monster Hunter until i'm a grandpa and i can't wait to tell kids there used to be like 4-5 moves for each weapon.

I had just finished highschool. I imported 3 psps from Japan and MHP3rd for each of them. I gave one each to my younger brother and sister. We hunted together for months. It was the last time we would all play a game together.

The thing i love about MHW is despite the new mechanics at the time (slinger pods), the core hunting and weapons mechanic is still the same (albeit with a few changes). You are still forced to read enemy's attack patterns and git gud with your weapons just like in all previous entries

When I walked around Japan with my 3DS, I would get dozens of Miis visiting my plaza. Do the same at home, and I'd be lucky to get 5 after a whole day out.

If anything, this video is underrated. Sadly I only found this video now after your Fatalis video. Good quality stuff here.

And thus, this game went from one of Capcoms least recognizable, to its best seller

I've been a huge fan of Monster Hunter ever since I discovered 3 and 4 Ultimate, and when 2018 rolled around and I would hear my friends talking about the newest game and recommending it to me, I just felt a sense of pride. I'm glad Monster Hunter is mainstream now.

I think Nintendo deserves a lot of credit for keeping monster hunter alive in the west after freedom unite Sony pretty much gave up on bring the series to the west P3 was never even localized but Nintendo gave us tri all the way up to generations until world blow up here.

I'm super happy Monster Hunter got this exposure. I just wish this game grabbed me like it did everyone else, though - not sure if it was the game itself or if I was just super into other things at the time, but World didn't click with me at all, even though I'd been into every Western release since Tri

I’d heard of monster hunter but never got the chance because I was with PlayStation at the time but as soon as I saw the trailer for World, I got so hyped for it and after playing the demos, I instantly fell in love with it. Hands down one of my, if not my favourite games of the last generation!!!

After being introduced to the series through 4 Ultimate, I remember being so hyped for World when it was announced. I definitely prefer Rise from what I've played, but World is still an incredible game and it can't be understated just how much it did for the franchise
