Marimari - feature documentary coming in August 2024
In a land where witches are still accused, tortured, and burnt, one woman does all she can to rescue and rehabilitate the survivors.
Evelyn Kunda is a subsistence farmer, teacher, a human rights defender, and the only woman from her village who doesn’t believe that she is surrounded by witches.
MARIMARI takes audiences into the villages, towns, and urban slums of Highlands Papua New Guinea where Evelyn fights to rescue and rehabilitate the survivors of sorcery violence. In the face of an almost ubiquitous belief in sorcery, this moving and cinematic, verité style film intimately observes Evelyn as she assists three families struggling to put their lives back together following violent attacks.
Papua New Guinea (PNG) is a country that faces many challenges, witch hunts, sorcery, or sanguma as it is known locally, is the most extreme end of those challenges. Sorcery accusation related violence (SARV) is a new issue that is not part of the traditional practices of the highlands, Simbu or Eastern Highlands provinces. Where there has long been a magical world view among Melanesian people the idea that sorcerers should be killed is a newer thing.
The courageous and compassionate work being done by human rights defenders in these areas is the subject if MARIMARI.
