The downside to all of the retconning is that while Charlie was right when he wrote "I hadn't fought a Sith in 20 years", with all of the Disney changes he is now a well oiled Sith fighting machine. He had recently killed Maul, fought several inquisitors and had a round 2 with Vader.

Palpatine made Anakin believe that the jedi possessed the secret to ever lasting life. He was angry when they "lied" to him and told him that they didn't. Palpatine promised that he'd help him find this eternal life to save Padme. He killed padme instead, and gave up the pursuit for ever lasting life.

Yoda had figured it out in death, and taught Obi-Wan. The eternal life wasn't an actual living, but the force ghost ability. So if vader killed Obi-Wan, freeing him from his mortal shell, he can be with Luke at all times, and no one could stop it. It's much easier to get around, be available for teaching, and giving advice when needed, as a force ghost than as an old mortal man.

So "strike me down and I'll be more powerful than before" was a true threat. One that vader didn't understand still later.

Force ghost Obi-Wan told Luke to use the force instead of relying on the aiming systems of his xwing, and this resulted in the deathstar blowing up.
