Prelaunch Update for NOAA’s JPSS 2 Weather Satellite and LOFTID NASA Tech Demo Media Briefing

Get a prelaunch update for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)’s Joint Polar Satellite System-2, or JPSS-2, set to launch Nov. 6 at 5:50 a.m. EST (1050 UTC) aboard a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. Participants include:

• Tim Walsh, director, of NOAA’s JPSS Program Office, NOAA
• John Gagosian, director, of NASA’s Joint Agency Satellite Division
• Irene Parker, deputy assistant administrator, NOAA Systems, National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Services
• Omar Baez, launch director, of NASA’s Launch Services Program
• Gary Wentz, vice president, of Government and Commercial Programs, ULA
• Jim Reuter, associate administrator for NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate
• Capt. Zack Zones, launch weather officer, U.S. Space Force

JPSS-2 is a new-generation polar-orbiting satellite system that will help improve weather forecasts and predict extreme weather events.

Also aboard the Atlas V rocket will be the secondary payload, NASA’s Low-Earth Orbit Flight Test of an Inflatable Decelerator (LOFTID). #LOFTID will demonstrate inflatable heat shield technology for atmospheric entry and re-entry. This technology could enable a variety of proposed NASA missions to destinations such as Mars, Venus, and Titan, as well as returning heavier payloads from low-Earth orbit.
