My trouble really isn't dropping the pick, it's finding it once it has been dropped. I think they end up in that dimension where dryer socks and 10mm sockets go

Good tips! I find the best way to keep from dropping my picks is to lay them on the amp. I really don't like to use them, but I'm trying. Have you tried different material picks? I've got some from Rocky Mountain Slide, I think they are made of some kind of horn. They have a smooth finish with a concave part in the middle, but they surprisingly don't move around in my fingers. Pretty thick, too.

So Ive been STIPPLING my picks for years and its killer. Take a wood burning pen (soldering iron will work too) it has brass tips, ive sanded one of them to a fine point (using belt sander) and I stipple certain brands of picks. It doesnt get any rougher but I thoroughly enjoy the results. I do it on The Jazz III Petrucci Dunlops and Dunlops Big Stubby models. Ive got some high end DAWMANS but it wont work on them as the polymer they use it crazy hard (they have redesigned theirs with more grip now so prob dont need it. So you get the pen nice and hot, and just tap the pick hard and release like youre dotting an i, and i completely cover the surface, usually it looks like a UFO shape when done, leave the "tip" of the pick as is, maybe a 1/4 smooth up, you can always do more and BE CAREFUL, its hot. and if it turns out to rough you can just lightly knock off the tops with sand paper. And of coarse we're talking 1.5 to 3mm picks here, as ive gotten older im dumbfounded I played the .58 picks the mjority of my life. #gripit&ripit

P.S. Im really loving my RNA Force Hoodie, i was concerned about getting a XXL as im not really that size but sometimes XL's are a tad small, the XXL is perfect and good quality, I have a motorcycle and its been performing well riding with it on, plus the neck is higher then on some which covers one of my chins and thats awesome :-)

I’ve used Dimes’s trick for years and it works. I’ll have to try drilling the holes, that’s a good idea!👍🏾

Tear off a small bit of medium to heavy grit sand paper, fold it over. Pinch your pick between the sand paper and pull it through a couple times in different directions to rough it up. I dont have trouble dropping my picks, but this helps get better grip and i like the feel of them better. You can lay the sandpaper down and run the flat of the pick across it too. I try not to sand the part that would touch the strings. Thats what i use to do, but the pinch method works well with heavy grit sand paper. Sometimes ill sand with a lighter gauge sand paper, then pinch with the rough. Doesnt take long to give em a bit of texture.

Rick Parfitt (ex Status Quo) did the same : drilling holes in his picks

Set the pick down on a scrap piece of wood or plastic and drill through it. It will be much easier than holding the pick with pliers and drilling.

I also "discovered" this a few months back. I think someone showed the Gravity picks with holes in them and I thought I'd try it on a few of my smooth-sided picks.
This was on some old 2.0mm Dunlops that were super slippery.
They feel much better with the holes - I also used a file and some sandpaper to make the tips pointier like on a Jazz3.
Still a bit too thick for me though.
I'm going to have to pick up some 1.5/1.2mm picks and see if I like that thickness better.

I have not used Jim Dunlop USA Nylon picks for years.
This video is making want to go to Sam Ash to get some more.
Easier than pulling out my power and hand tools to get grip picks.

I did both and my picks would still slip. I eventually stated putting grip tape (skateboard backing) pieces and that works like a charm

From Leo: Ryan, you made me laugh, I thought I was the only one that did stuff like that. With all the hundreds of pick options we have we still make our own custom versions. I like your drill Idea. I am a Jazz III guy 90% of the time. For acoustic strumming type work, I use a more limber Max grip pick, but I don't like a big pick, so I cut some of the back part away with tin snips.

FYI Ryan: the Delrin/Tortex picks are made of a material that when you wet your fingers, they grip BETTER! Go ahead, give it a try!
