A 10-year-old girl is in the ICU after she was shot in Salisbury Tuesday night, police said. The Salisbury Police Department is giving an update on the case and if any arrests have been made. The news conference is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. ET in Salisbury, North Carolina.
Family members told WCNC Charlotte that the girl and her grandmother were returning home from the grocery store when a person who followed them home opened fire. The grandmother, whose name is April, said she heard four shots and that her granddaughter was shot in the side. She was rushed to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem in critical condition.
Wednesday was supposed to be her first day of school, according to the family. The girl's grandmother hopes someone with information comes forward soon and asked everyone to pray for her granddaughter. Salisbury police said the shooting appears to be isolated and investigators do not believe there is a threat to the public at this time.
"Just praying for everything to be alright," one person said. "It's gotta be some young, ignorant person to shoot at a kid and a grandma. They don't have any remorse for nobody."
A vehicle speeding away from the area attempted to hit a responding Rowan County deputy and multiple people fired shots at him, according to the sheriff's office. The deputy, identified as Lt. David Scott, returned fire and the suspect crashed. Four people jumped from the car and continued shooting at the deputy, who was able to take cover. The suspects were able to get away and are still on the loose, according to investigation.
