Hong Kong Airlines was in financial trouble even before the protests. Hong Kong is too small of a market to sustain two competing carriers especially since Cathay Pacific gobbled up Dragonair and HK Express giving it both regional and low cost routes and the fact Cathay is the city's flag carrier.

Despite being saved from bankruptcy after being pumped 40 million yuan from HNA this week, I personally don't think they can survive long.
Hong Kong Airlines has been suffering from issues such as poor management and over-expansion, and the recent protests in HK kinda made it worse. They were almost unable to pay their debts earlier this year, and four out of the five senior management board members left the company. Right now, the Hong Kong Airlines brand has turned stinky and the company's moral is quite low in my opinion.
Unless huge changes were made for the airline, like a huge new investor or a complete makeover of the airline (rebranding, relocating its position in the market), it won't be long before HX was in another financial crisis, needing to depend on its HNA mama to save the day AGAIN
