Buying Glasses in Paraguay!

Until recently I had two sets of glasses. I lost one set on a hike and the other pair I rolled on in bed and squashed. So, I was in a little blind and in a bind.

We stumbled across an awesome Optometrist in Caacupe. The prices and selection were outstanding. If you're coming to Paraguay and you have glasses, check out this video because you might decide to stock up.

Off topic question: are there a lot of "persistent contrails" down there? If you know what I mean? 😉 Thanks.

Great! I bough also glasses at Optica Adonai two years ago. I just chose them as they were just next to the house we previously lived in😂

Hi there Life in Paraguay. Another interesting video report.

Here are a few points from a lifelong specs user.

Most western developed countries charge exorbitant prices for prescription glasses.

Here's a few insights...

Frames wholesale, IE price paid by your optician / opthalmologist probably confortably no more than UK £5 /US$ 7 +/- The cost of blank lenses, before grinding to prescription UK£ 1/US$ 1.50

Mark ups in the retail optician/ opthalmologist business are in the 1000s% class, think cosmetics industry mark up levels ( pretty young smiling sales personnel in crisp white coats in premium shopping locations is what you're paying for.

I used to live in LA, bought my specs south of the border down Tijuana way to make huge savings.

In the UK when you go for an eye test, generally speaking they will ask to see your existing glasses, which they then measure to obtain their prescription. If you don't have them with you, they'll ask you for your previous prescription BEFORE DOING THE FRESH EYE TEST.

The fresh eye test results are almost never the same, usually stronger than your existing specs/ prescription... Go figure😅

Thus for many years I always go to eye tests well prepared, IE without specs and without prescription.

I do it once every two years +/-. I often get new prescriptions which are NO CHANGE since two years ago, and thus do not get new specs.

It's a retail scam.

From the UK many folks get new specs whilst on overseas holidays in places like Turkey, Egypt and especially India.

Moral of the story, margins are huge, it's a high pressure sales industry where professional monopolies are common in all developed countries.

Caveat Emptor applies! Buyer Beware

US$75 is plenty per pair
