What are the dangers of artificial intelligence?

Ask us anything about AI is a Concordia Digital Strategy initiative in collaboration with the university’s Office of Research with the goal of fostering a community conversation about Artificial Intelligence (AI). The conversation is structured by crowdsourcing a curated series of questions from the community and producing video responses to these from our faculty researchers.

In some respects, a similar problem as with human intelligence - what are the parameters of the problem that you're trying to solve? e.g. the scientist who invented tetraethyllead as a fuel additive was solving the problem of finding a solution to "engine knock" in cars that was both effective and cheap enough to be practical to produce; being non-toxic wasn't really on his radar. It was only until later when large numbers of people started experiencing the effects of lead poisoning did "unleaded gasoline" even become a thing.
