How Ari Aster Spoiled Midsommar in the First Shot: All the Mural Aster Eggs.

Ari Aster's lastest film, Midsommar is one of my favorite films of 2019 so far. Recently, I watch an HD digital download from Itunes and as I expected, I noticed many more details and Easter Eggs than I had during my first viewing. Because there are so many details, I will break down one in particular: The mural that appears in the first shot of the film, and then spoils everything that comes after.

Let me know how you interpreted the mural and if you noticed any interesting details in Midsommar.

Instrumental produced by Chuki.

Not sure if someone mentioned this or not but there are 9 skeletons/skulls throughout the tapestry (NOT included the giant skull in the upper left) to symbolize the 9 lives sacrificed as part of their Midsommar Ritual.

The final shot in the film where Dani's smile is overlayed with the burning a-frame is what comes to mind when i see the sun in the top right corner.

You can notice that Christian has his hand behind his back with his fingers crossed. Consoling Dani but also “wishing” that he was not with her.

The start of Spring the trees and flowers are “larger” because of the mushroom trip they were on.

Danny sees the faces of her mother and sister while she dances and her father afterwards. Probably the three skeletons in the last bit of the mural represent that.

I definitely think Pelle had more planned out than it seems in the initial viewing. I watched this again tonight and I just realized that when the elder was welcoming them all to Harga he looks specifically at Dani and says “Welcome home.” I had initially thought that was directed at Pelle.

Noticed during the film that Mark has his jeans tucked into his socks, and thought, wow those poor socks. Little did I know that it was representing the fact that he is a jester/fool.

Mu pan is my drawing teacher at the school of visual arts!! He’s super talented and a great professor. I’m so glad I took his class. He’s a super cool guy and was really excited about having his work in this film :) I should definitely ask him more about the mural and his process working on it

Notice that Christians fingers are crossed behind his back when he is consoling Dani - he doesn't actually care about her.

I noticed, in the beginning when it shows Dani's parents dead in their bed you can see a picture of Dani on the nightstand and a vase of flowers behind her and it looks like a crown on top of Dani's head...

The people performing the Attestupan in the mural aren’t the ones that perform the ritual in the movie. The mural depicts them as Dani’s parents, look again at the first segment of the mural. If you remember, following the Attestupan, Dani not only has a nightmare seeing her parents and sister at the bottom of the cliff, but she even hallucinates the presence of her parents in the village several times

I actually thought that the order here went backwards: winter, fall, summer, spring. They mention in the movie that to the people of harga, life is like the seasons where spring is birth, and winter is death. I thought that it was like if Dani is going backwards and being reborn, like she had been stuck in the winter of death back home and her role in harga was to start anew in spring. They do put Dani and the others with in the house with the children, after all.

Nicely done. A few things I noticed...
1. The mural is in 5 parts/scenes, so not likely representing the 4 seasons.
2. In the second “scene” Christian’s fingers are crossed behind his back (he’s telling a lie).
3. In the fourth “scene”, the elders falling have the faces of Dani’s parents.
4. Perhaps the cow represents animals sacrificed/slaughtered for the meals & table centerpiece?
5. Finally, there are runes across the top and bottom borders.
Edit: Also, Mark the Fool is holding his vape pen. Parents are depicted in same position as elders when falling (but not in same position as their choice of dying.) Oh, and boobs.
