Midsommar Plot Recap
At it’s core Midsommar is a film about the breakdown of a toxic relationship that just so happens to be set against terrifying circumstances. We follow Dani, played expertly by Florence Pugh, who after the loss of her family due to a heartbreaking tragedy, finds herself alone with no one to turn to other than her Boyfriend Christian.

Christian was planning on breaking up with Dani, however due to the guilt that he feels over her loss and the eventual guilt of isolation that she puts on him he postpones it and invites her on a trip to Halsingland, a Swedish festival that only happens once every 90 years.

Dani throughout the film goes on an arc that is pretty much caused by the loss of her family and throughout the film she drifts from group to group, desperately seeking acceptance no matter the cost to those around her.

The Hargas Explained
In the script, the Hargas are basically the product of generations of incest that hang Boar Carcasses from branches and look like 19th-century farmers that spend most of their time dancing around the Maypole.

Though they seem like a group of hippies that hand out magic mushrooms like it’s nothing, eventually their way of life and the rituals that they begin to carry out make it clear that things aren’t right. They far outnumber the group and this makes them intimidating as they slowly start to pick everyone apart.

The Hargas as they’re known, communicate through little gestures and expressions known as Affects which hint at their true intentions without notifying others and early on these slight language barriers highlight that this is all an act for them. Every time one Hargan is born the group plant a tree that is apparently tied directly to their life and as it grows, they do too. Their affection for the Earth plays into the film later and they almost live their life purely based off nature alone.

Midsommar Ending Explained
In the end she is pronounced the Queen, but unlike Game Of Thrones, this Dani sticks around. After being paraded through the field, kissed and adorned with flowers she is finally ready to cut off the negative aspects of her life and join her new family.

Symbolically the burning of Christian and his friends in the final sacrifice showcase that she is letting go of all the things that have held her back and is ready to move on from the things in her life that are holding her back.

For the finale we watch as Christian melts into the fire and Dani is paraded as the new queen. She goes through a mix of emotions including excitement, fear, confusion but ultimately she’s happy, happy that she finally has a new family and is accepted. The character has gone insane but in her mind, she is a queen, worshipped by all and finally living a life free of paranoia and distrust which ends the film.

Midsommar Review
So what did I think of the film? Well as I’m sure you can guess I think this again is another masterpiece by Ari Aster that yet again cements the director as one of the best voices in horror that we currently have. This shows that things like the Conjuring Universe, which in my opinion have dumbed down horror a bit, aren’t to be taken as this decades examples of the genre and though I don’t think that this topped Hereditary it still is horrifying.

Midsommar is haunting from beginning to end and it’s use of vibracy and o

did anyone else notice during one of Dani's breakdowns Pelle tells her he understands becuase his parents "burned up in a fire"... possibly they were sacrifices?

I love how they ended up "skinning the fool" in the end. The jester's hat was a simultaneously funny and creepy touch...

Their relationship looked anything but picture perfect on the surface. Lol. And I don't blame someone for clinging onto a relationship of 4 years after you lose your entire family.

The soundtrack leading up to the two jumping from the cliff was amazing.

Despite my brain saying "What the hell?" and "This is messed up" when the credits rolled I was like "Hmm, I enjoyed that."

This movie triggers anxiety . I wouldn’t call it a horror film, but multiple people being in an almost constant state of paralyzing anxiety wore me out. The erratic breathing & swirly patterns, whew. A part of me wanted this movie in 3D ..it would have been extra trippy, but I would have probably needed a support dog 😩 The colors were amazing & the soundtrack was beautiful.

I have to see it again. I know I'm missing a lot. Has anyone pointed out the fact Dani knew Swedish and was the only one out of the group greeted with "welcome home" as opposed to just "welcome" like the others? There's a lot of either prophecy or cult planning going on behind the scenes..

Her boyfriend should have been nicer to her

Sex scene was super awkward, especially with old granny trying to help him finish

What if there's an alternative ending where she choose the disfigured kid, do you think the community will let her?

I definitely needed a breakdown of things after seeing this movie. It was a very intriguing and captivating film. At no point did it not manage to keep my eyes glued. I love the horror genre and nothing about this movie was cheap. The best ones are the ones that make you think and don't give everything away immediately

I think having used psychedelics makes for a different viewing experience. The added anxiety, chaos, sense of dread that being on those intense drugs creates would be too much to bare. I thought the first trip sequence was perfect. Dani was really in a good place, connecting with nature (literally), and all it took was hearing the word “family” for her to spin out and come unglued. I have never seen people in a worse mental state choosing to trip. “My entire family was just killed in a murder/suicide, but why don’t I take mushrooms with my asshole boyfriend and his insensitive friends while surrounded by weirdo strangers? What could possibly go wrong?!”

honestly I loved this movie it was so unique and different from what I'm used to in horror. Even Ari describes the film as a perverted wicked wizard of oz and that is the best way to describe this disturbing master piece.

Did anyone catch the Face in the Trees right after Dani became the MayQueen?

I just saw it, and I don’t know what to think! I’m sad, happy, nervous all at the same time.

Damn dude, I'm not even a feminist and I can tell you got a pretty severe chauvinistic interpretation of Dani's character. I mean, she's on hallucinogens for 50% of the film and her boyfriend sucks. Saying she clings to any attention given to her is an extremely shallow reading.

SPOILERS (duh):

The ending really isn’t that deep. The entire movie you see her getting broken down and starting to get along with the people in the group. The movie is about the indoctrination of people into cults, along with the obvious relationship stuff. I’m honestly shocked people aren’t understanding this. Some people (Stuckmann, Angry Joe, other shit reviewers) are saying the first 20 minutes has nothing to do with the rest of the movie? Did we not watch the same film? It’s just another point that builds the case for her staying with the cult. Why the hell would she go back to the US? To go date another douchebag and go back to the country her entire family died? She’s happy, and it’s a fucked up thing objectively. But that’s how cults work. They prey on broken people. The guy that leads them there even says “I’m glad that you are here” specifically stating multiple times that he has an interest in her. He knows she’s more broken than the others, so it’s going to be much easier to indoctrinate her than the British couple, her boyfriend, or anybody else.

I think Hereditary’s best elements are better than this movie best elements (namely THAT sequence and Toni Collette’s performance) but this movie is better on the whole. Hereditary kind of falls apart in the last 10 minutes. It’s not awful, and it makes sense, but it’s just much more mediocre than the rest of the movie. Midsommar is much better paced, more deliberate, better edited, better music, and more. But the films are neck and neck tbh. I’m excited to see what Ari Aster does next.

Nobody deserved the fate they received at the hands of the self-serving cult. Dani was also the only white, blond haired woman among the group. She was just the most attractive to the cult, and the only member they would be okay with assimilating.
