I suggest wearing a backpack with padding for beginners, comes in handy as well since i carry spare gloves or clothes

Tried snowboarding last season at the ripe old age of 50. Managed a slow spead heal edge catch first day and was concussed. You certainly learn very quickly to keep those edges up. Those hits suck.
