Kia Rio in-depth review - Carbuyer

The latest Kia Rio is a smartly, if conservatively-styled supermini that rivals cars like the Ford Fiesta and Skoda Fabia. There’s a range of petrol engines and a pair of economical diesels. With a big boot, the Kia Rio is practical and spacious, and owning one should be painless thanks to Kia’s seven-year warranty. Despite all this, it doesn’t excite like the best cars in this class - which offer agile handling - although it is comfortable on the move. In isolation, it’s a good car, but it suffers from the talents of rivals.

Kia have updated this model since the video and the new one has even more features for less! Definitely the best car on the market for the price and size.

The kia is cheaper then the corsa and the fiesta and is in a different size class to the Golf. How come the price wasn't mentioned in this review as it is a lot cheaper then the other cars mentioned and the spec levels are a lot better.I have a 2012 Rio 2 1.4 and I love it. Lot's of room inside, well thought out with Bluetooth phone connectivity and electric everything. Smooth ride and good on all roads. How you can believe fuel figures after VWs little hickup, I don't know. The Kia range is great, both me and my wife have Kia's (Rio and a Venga) and we have been very happy with them and would buy one again. Stop the badge snob brigade!

“No transmission tunnel” I agree, I hate when you buy a Kia Rio and the prop shaft for the RWD system eats into the cabin space.

It's a lot of car for the money!
Never get why everbody keeps raving about the Ford Fiesta, it is cramped and rather expensive for its size. I think the Rio makes up for a better choice for what most wants from a car lik this.

Rio vs Fiesta vs Polo
Polo
great performance. poor long term maintenance (so it's a buy to sell car unless you're in love with it). decent fuel consumption. most features in the kit are optional and pricey.
Fiesta
best of the 3 in performance. Good fuel consumption. kit is alright but only 2 airbags with no options for increase. so it's a car you buy for as a solo driver. boot space is non existent (use the back seat. You're a solo driver anyway). overall good as a raw car but awful on practicality and kit.
Rio
performance is mid tier between the three which makes it forgettable to be honest. it's faster than the Fiesta, but slower than the Polo on average. fuel consumption is similar to the others (like. 2 higher)
all kias are buy to keep cars. insane reliability, outrageous warranties and great service and maintenance plans. great utility on bootspace and all the other compartments. it shines above the other 2 on tech really. it's got the latest kind of everything for small cars and they're easy to manage from one location. certainly a super mini family car. solo drivers will appreciate the the other two more just because of the "fun factor" though.

I like the Rio, had one once wile my car was in for a service, it just needed an extra 50hp or so.

Trying to be unbiased with her review. Trying not to mention Ford or VW...oops sorry she just did. This is a very good car. Too good for Carbuyer to be reviewing as they dont seem to appreciate anything other than those ubiquitous brands I just mentioned.

Not a single mention of the 208 or Mazda2, or even more glaring, this car's stablemate, the i20. The Rio has some nice touches, and I wouldn't mark it down even if it hadn't stored the luminous green drinks bottle, but there's a lot of elephant hide plastic in there... no plastic test? There's also a First Edition model at the top of the range - the sort that looks the part without having any hot-hatch pretensions - but I'd go for the 3, personally.
