MR2 and Del Sol are also a couple of good options, but share the same issues as the Miata. Rust as well as getting run off the interstate because no one can see your tiny car.

Don't forget about the Audi TT MkI's. I picked mine up for $1500, plenty of HP, turbo, 5 or 6 speed manual tranny, has 210k miles on it and its still very fun to drive. I have had to replace the alternator and that is it. Minus brake pads, and normal wear and tear stuff. But very fun to drive and cheap to operate. Most parts can be sourced from VW's so you can save yourself a lot of money replacing $300 parts with $20 vw parts, they are the same part, just different badging. Example, the side mirror controller from Audi is $250, but the one for a VW golf is $13.50 and they are the same thing, wired the same, look the same, just different badging VW or Audi and you can't even see the badging when its installed.

If it isn't equipped with rear wheel drive, a mid engine and two seats, it's not really a Miata replacement for me.

5.0 Foxbodies in decent shape definitely are not cheap. Solid rollers are going for upwards of 4-5k due to their popularity in the no prep drag racing scene the last 5 or 6 years.

I'm really liking my 2018 124 spider, I know it's mostly just a Miata, but that turbo multi air makes all the difference, and it's the best looking Miata that has ever been made. Thinking about getting a Dogbox transmission for it.

Call me crazy all you want, but I'd say none of the above would be my choice. My choice would be any of these black sheep: VW R32, Lexus IS250/IS300, or maybe go back a few decades and look for a 1970's sedan generally speaking. Dumb fact: Option 3 is primarily because I want a taste of the era while still having a checkmark on everyday practicality.

Dude dsm! I just bought a 1993 eagle talon tsi awd for 2, 700$. Turbo, manual, awd, and 3100lbsish. Not to mention, it's a 4g63t, which is a legendary engine with TONS of after market parts. Old school turbo nosies, can drive it year around( i live in montana) with unlimited tuning potential! Cant beat it, + it doesn't have subaru head gasket issues 😂😂
