The Flying Dutchman was a sea captain named Hendrik van der Decken, he was sailing from Amsterdam to Batavia and rounded the Cape of Good Hope during a ferocious storm. Legend has it that he swore that he would succeed, even if he had to sail until Judgment Day. The devil heard his oath, and took him up on it.

This legendary ghost ship is still seen in our waters around the Cape. It is said to materialize suddenly, then suddenly disappear.

Can’t a legend be a mystery?

A legend can be a mystery too.

This title is confusing, as both words apply to the Dutchman, therefore defeating the purpose of the question, which is implying that we are to ask which the Dutchman is, when in reality it is both.
